During this fourth season of Welcome to Plathville we’ve seen mom Kim Plath start spending a lot of time out of the family home in order to follow her own path. She opened up a dance studio, decided she wanted a divorce from Barry after 24 years of marriage, and is in general on a path to finding herself. For a while, she was spending more time at the family’s various rental properties than at home. A big problem with that, however, is that she still continues to home school her minor children. Without Kim at home older sister Lydia had to pick up the slack on schooling.

Tensions are high between Moriah Plath and her sister-in-law and roommate Olivia Plath over a visit to deceased Plath sibling Joshua’s grave for his birthday. Moriah arranged the family get together to celebrate Joshua’s memory, but the graveside memorial soon turned to drama between Olivia and Moriah when mom Kim Plath decided to come as well.

In Season 4 Kim Plath has given her family, and viewers of Welcome to Plathville, a bit of whiplash by backtracking on her behavior and “rules” for her family. For decades Kim and Barry Plath lived mostly outside of society and shunned alcohol, sugar, all mainstream media, and most interaction with the outside world. Now, Kim has completely changed, is divorcing Barry, and no longer has such strict expectations for her children.

Over drinks with her son Micah, Kim explains that a personal trauma could have caused her to be overprotective of her children.

The Plath family of TLC’s Welcome to Plathville has some serious inner-conflicts. One of the biggest struggles is the issue their oldest son Ethan and his wife Olivia have with Ethan’s mom Kim. By season two of the show Olivia and Ethan were completely no contact with Kim and Barry Plath. The former couple have raised their nine children in an extremely sheltered environment in rural Georgia, and once taught their kids that marriage is forever. NKim and Barry got married really young and didn’t really take the time to get to know each other before their wedding.

TLC will be introducing viewers to another Southern Quiverfull family this week with the premiere of their new reality series Welcome To Plathville. The show features the Plath family, which includes parents Barry and Kim Plath as well as their nine children ranging in ages from six to twenty-one. It’s unclear if the topic will be addressed on the show, but there was a tenth child that died in a tragic accident a little over a decade ago — something Kim has been quite open about online.
