Rich Kids of Instagram TV show is in development
The square frames of Instagram pictures are apparently too restrictive when it comes to showing off the lavish lives of trust fund babies. The E! network is solving that major issue by developing a new reality series based on the popular blog, Rich Kids of Instagram.
Deadline Hollywood reported the unscripted series will be produced by ITV Studios America, which also produces Kitchen Nightmares. The show will follow “a group of 20-something friends living in a world of extreme wealth who caught notice on Instagram.” The working title is Rich Kids of Beverly Hills.
The concept isn’t particularly new. Rich kids first got major reality show exposure with Laguna Beach in the early 2000s. Since then, there have been dozens of similarly inspired shows… I can’t help but relate it to My Sweet 16, where teens frequently broke into tears upon getting the wrong color Mercedes.
Based on the Rich Kids of Instagram feed, that’s right up the alley with these entitled young adults: There’s the guy saying “F**k the Hamptons” while lounging outside of a mansion, the kid trying to decide between an Audi and Ferrari and the girl posing on a super-sized yacht à la Keeping Up With the Kardashians.
So far it seems people of social media aren’t too keen on the idea of rich kids getting another reality show.
“Everything that’s wrong with television,” wrote one annoyed Twitter user.
Then again, these kinds of reality shows are continually recycled for one major reason: People watch!
