Why did Cardi B name her baby Kulture? The unique choice, explained
The seemingly endless wait for Cardi B to have her baby is now over. Cardi gave birth to her first child (and husband Offset’s fourth) on Tuesday; both parents announced their daughter’s birth yesterday on social media. Of even greater interest, though, has been Cardi and Offset’s choice of a name for their baby girl: Kulture Kiari Cephus. The unusual choice continues a long line of unique names in both Cardi and Offset’s families — and adds to a growing list of celebrity babies with standout names.
Why did Cardi B name her baby Kulture? Where did it come from?
Cardi B — whose pregnancy had been one of the biggest secrets in entertainment since gossip blogs first reported on it last autumn — is only the stage name for the performer; her real name is Belcalis Marlenis Almanza. Likewise, Offset’s real name — the source for two-thirds of he and Cardi’s daughter — is Kiari Kendrell Cephus.
And, as Vulture pointed out, the choice of “Kulture” is quite “on-brand” for Offset: Migos’ last two albums are Culture and Culture II. Which is in turn doubly fitting, as Cardi and Offset have become a bigger and bigger part of the pop culture landscape ever since rumors of their engagement — rumors that, it’s worth noting, also turned out to be true — surfaced last summer.
Cardi B’s choice of birth announcement was also on-brand
Cardi B baby bump pics have been a hot commodity in the tabloid world. Cardi and Offset’s Rolling Stone cover attempted to short-circuit some of the demand for the pics earlier this summer; the couple did the same thing by using a pair of high-quality seminude maternity shots to reveal Kulture’s birth, instead of sharing the first pictures of Kulture herself.
Here’s Cardi’s reveal:
And here’s the shot Offset chose:
As for legit pics of baby Kulture, her parents have yet to release anything. The internet therefore stepped in with a bunch of brand-new Cardi B baby memes. The clear winner, based on a throwback pic Cardi shared on Instagram the day before Kulture’s birth, is this beauty:

“Kulture” nestles comfortably with recent celebrity baby names
As many observers were quick to point out, “Kulture” is unique enough to mesh well with her parents’ names and fit alongside some of her future peers. In fact, 2018 has been another banner year for weird and / or cool celeb baby names. As the East Bay Times reminded everyone, we’ve seen a bumper crop over the last few:
True, from Khloe Kardashian and Tristan Thompson– Stormi, from Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott– North, Saint and Chicago, from Kim Kardashian and Kanye West– Strummer, from Julia Stiles & Preston J. Cook– Blue Ivy, Sir and Rumi, from Beyonce and Jay-Z– Bodhi Soleil, from Nikki Reed and Ian Somerhalder– Dream, from Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna– Journey River and Bodhi Ransom, from Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green– Bear, from Kate Winslet and Ned Rocknroll
Congratulations to Cardi B and Offset on their first child together!
