Shayne Lamas said doctors were forced to end her baby’s life during emergency hysterectomy

Shayne Lamas - Nik Richie - Medical Emergency

The Bachelor‘s Shayne Lamas-Richie said doctors were forced to terminate her pregnancy to save her life during a recent medical emergency.

Shayne’s life-threatening experience occurred in the middle of February when she was 20-weeks pregnant with her second child. She told InTouch the baby was outside of her uterus, alongside her bladder. The growing baby punctured her placenta, which sent her body into shock.

“My son had to be removed to save my life… The doctors hadn’t seen anything like it,” she said, explaining doctors were forced to remove her uterus and half her bladder.

Husband Nik Richie, who runs The Dirty, recalled when doctors said the procedure was necessary to save Shayne’s life.

“It wasn’t a miscarriage. It was them having to kill our child to save my wife,” he told InTouch. “She died on the table and they brought her back. The doctors said it was an absolute miracle. There were two minutes where she lost oxygen to her brain. They said she could have brain damage. It was a nightmare.”

When Shayne awoke from her medically induced coma and learned what happened, she said she screamed at the top of her lungs: “You never think something like this will happen to you. I felt like someone hit me again and again and again.”

Shayne and Nik posthumously named their son Rex Jagger Lamas-Richie. Shayne is now recovering at home — with help from 2-year-old daughter Press.

Although the situation was incredibly devastating for the family, Shayne takes comfort in knowing she can have more children.

“I’ll be able to give my eggs to a surrogate,” Shayne said, explaining doctors were able to save her ovaries. “I absolutely will have more kids.”
