The Soup’s Joel McHale takes gay rumors as a compliment

Joel McHale doesn’t mind the constant speculation that he’s gay. Actually he finds the notion pretty flattering.

In a past interview with The Advocate, the Community star joked that many folks probably assumed he was gay because he dressed so well. Now in a recent chat with the mag he’s acknowledged that the rumors of his sexual orientation still haven’t gone away.

The Soup host said:

“Oh, I still see that on Twitter every day. It’s flattering. I always find it really weird when guys flip out over someone thinking they might be gay. If a guy gets offended by that, there’s something’s wrong with him. I take it as a compliment.”

In the interview, McHale explains how he approaches making gay jokes during his segment “Gay Shows” on The Soup without being offensive:

You have to be intelligent, you have to laugh with, and you have to meet the clip where it is. I know that sounds weird and vague, but it’s a case-by-case situation. We’re mostly commenting on what’s happening on those shows — like RuPaul sticking cake pops into gl0ry h0les on RuPaul’s Drag Race — and not on someone’s orientation.

McHale has been married to wife Sarah Williams for 17 years, and they have two sons together.
