Drew Barrymore on mom Jaid Barrymore: We can’t really be in each other’s lives
Now a mother-of-one with a second daughter on the way, Drew Barrymore said she’s more aware than ever how twisted her relationship with mother Jaid Barrymore really was.
“Ugh, I mean, my relationship with my mom is so complicated that… I’ve always been empathetic toward my mom,” Drew said for the February 2014 edition of Marie Claire. “But we can’t really be in each other’s lives at this point.”
Even though Drew was successfully emancipated from her parents when she was 15, it’s taken her the 23 years since to reach this conclusion.
“When I was a kid, everything was so unplanned, my parents were so erratic and my world was so inconsistent,” she said, understating the nature of her childhood. In actuality, Drew began clubbing when her mom while just a kid. She went to drug addiction and rehab at the tender age of 13. The year after that, she moved into her own apartment.
“I hated growing up alone. I hated it,” Drew said. Still, she has come to see the silver lining. “I don’t f**k anyone over. My friends are the loves my life.”
