AUDIO Comedian Jen Kirkman clarifies her comments on Louis CK’s sexual misconduct

Louis 490

Comedian Jen Kirkman has clarified comments she recently made regarding an unnamed fellow comic, which many took to imply impropriety on Louis CK’s part. The since-deleted April 20th episode of Kirkman’s podcast was devoted to the topic of females in comedy, and contained the following description:

And then I had another guy who is a very famous comic. He is probably at Cosby-level at this point. He is lauded as a genius. He is basically a French filmmaker at this point. You know, new material every year. He’s a known perv. And there’s a lockdown on talking about him. His guy friends are standing by him, and you cannot say a badthing about him. And I’ve been told by people “Well then say it then. Say it if it’s true.” If I say it, my career is over. My manager and my agent have told me that. They didn’t threaten it. They just said to me “You know what Jen, it’s not worth it because you’ll be torn apart. Look at the Cosby women.” And this guy didn’t rape me, but he made a certain difficult decision to go on tour with him really hard. Because I knew if I did, I’d be getting more of the same weird treatment I’d been getting from him. And it was really f*cked up, and this person was married. So it was not good, and so I hold a lot of resentment.

That podcast was released roughly one month before Gawker published a story on an unnamed victim of an unnamed comic’s unwanted sexual advances. That story, combined with the discovery of Kirkman’s earlier podcast and the flare-up over Louis CK’s monologue on the season finale of SNL, made for a speculation-laden couple of weeks.

Kirkman addressed that speculation in the latest episode of her “I Seem Fun” podcast, which hits on, among other topics, Caitlyn Jenner and her many haters; what it’s like for a feminist to go on the Howard Stern show; what it’s like to prepare to go on Conan O’ Brien’s show; and how much Kirkman’s mother loves Marc Maron’s television program.

Kirkman begins to address the speculation at around the 14:20 mark:

Her somewhat-truncated remarks are as follows:

I did delete an episode of this podcast because I had done a one-hour segment about what it’s like to be a woman in comedy. My point was that nobody has ever taken their genitals out in front of me, or hurt me physically, but that, in this business, you have friends, mentors, co-workers, who can sometimes be creepy in a way that isn’t funny. Suddenly you don’t feel part of a joke, you feel…like…you are being…inappropriately hit on by someone who is married….All of the people that I spoke about anonymously on that podcast are still friends of mine, and I’m fine with them and they’re fine with me. And they all know the stuff they did that bothered me. It’s nuanced, that way. I’m not going to their house for Christmas. I’m not still not of the opinion that they might be a little weird. But what I was never was sexually abused.

Kirkman goes on to discuss her broader point, which is that men in comedy don’t have to deal with unwanted advances and sexual misconduct the way that women do, and that actions like those make things like careers more difficult for women to navigate.

well there you go. If it wasn’t Louis CK she was talking about, she would have taken that opportunity to say so. but all she did was say that she wasn’t abused, she was creeped out. Does that change anything? No, it doesn’t. To me, this is confirmation of all the rumors. It means he didn’t masturbate in front of her, but he was creepy to her, but it wasn’t bad enough to make her stop being friends with him.

    • Nabend1401

So sexual abuse and being a bit creepy are the same to you? Boy, I hope no one ever slaps you in the face, because you’ll have them tried for murder.

      • SSSSS

are you a complete moron? Where did I say sexual abuse and being creepy are the same thing? I said he didn’t sexually abuse her, he was creepy to her. That means she wasn’t one of the female comics who said that he masturbated in front of her in a hotel room and tried to stop her from leaving <— that is sexual abuse. Don't comment unless you're smart enough to comprehend the thing you're responding to, stupid.

        • Nabend1401

“Does that change anything? No, it doesn’t” You said you believe it doesn’t change anything, that he was only being “creepy”, a subjective judgment by Mrs Kirkman, which is of absolutely no consequence, as opposed to sexual abuse, a crime punishable by considerable jail time. If that doesn’t change anything for you, then there is something wrong with you. It also does in no way confirm any unrelated, unsubstantiated rumours. “He’s clearly a serial sexual abuser because that one time, ten years ago hit on a girl and she didn’t like it. What a monster.” It doesn’t mean that those rumours aren’t true either, of course, it is simply completely unrelated.
And as for our respective intelligence… I’m more eloquent and coherent in my second language than you are in your first. So believe me, anything you manage to comprehend, I comprehended many years ago.

      • kate

How did you get that from what she said? maybe you should reread it.

        • Jay Dee

he’s right, that SSSSSS nazi fvk says all kinds of bullshet.

          • kate

sounds like you have nazi’s on the brain. SSSSSS has nothing to do with nazis, you f*cking moron. you’re thinking of SS, which GUESS WHAT–also stands for a sh*tload of things other than nazis, but I guess when you’re obsessed with that you see it everywhere, you f*cking piece of sh*t loser anti-semite. go f*ck yourself and die a horrible, painful death asap. I HOPE YOU GET MURDERED TODAY.

    • Corey Pierce

Kudos to Starcasm for being the only gossip site who has bothered to post an update. Jezebel and Death&Taxes perhaps being too scared to look bad. Or just irresponsible.

If you take this as confirming the rumors though, what the hell. Something happened between them. She may even think he’s a perv. He may be one. Something may come out of this. But there’s still at this point nobody on the record, and the first source Defamer even contacted said their facts were wrong. There’s nothing but anonymous comments, no specific allegations. Gawker media has one blind item, and they took Jen’s comments to infer that the same specific behavior happened to her. Which she explicitly says didn’t.

    • Jay Dee

You’re a fvking idiot !!!!He wasnt creepy to her, he kind of came onto her even though he was married…..moron…omg

      • kate

haha MORON, you turned out to be WRONG! Do you feel stupid? because you look like such an angry idiot. GO FCKYOURSELF

        • Jay Dee

          How am l “WRONG “? 😂

          • kate

Rosanne confirmed that Louis CK is the comic that sexually harassed female comics and kept them from leaving the room when he was masturbating in front of them.

            • Jay Dee

Wow ROSEAAANNNNE……comfirmed it. Wow that makes it valid then. You Americans really live in an Idiocracy don’t you. 😐

    • Porst

You’re still making assumptions based on guesses. She said the guy who creeped on her was married. CK hasn’t been married since 2008 and would’ve started separation and proceedings before that. Jen was a complete unknown at the time and was based on the opposite side of the country. The timelines don’t line up.

      • kate

So it turned out you were completely wrong and I was completely right. go figure. Maybe don’t be so quick to call out other people when you’re so sure you know what you’re talking about.

        • Porst

I’m not sure if you meant to respond to me or someone else, because I didn’t say anything to you in that comment, nor did I “call out” anyone. In any case Jen Kirkman has since clarified she was not talking about Louis CK, so regardless of who else he’s harassed, I was correct in my assertion that the timelines don’t add up. Perhaps you need to get a better hobby than digging up comments on a 2 year old article to brag inaccurately.

          • kate

EXCEPT Rosanne confirmed that Louis CK is the comic that was sexually harassing
            female comics!

            • Porst

She said she’s heard rumors about him, not anything concrete. You’re not even getting 2nd or 3rd hand information, you’re getting hearsay. You were wrong about the context of this article but still act like you weren’t. Stop moving goalposts back to try and pretend you have some sort of insider details. Best to drop your attempt at an argument on this particular article lest you embarrass yourself.

  • Dana Swank

Someone is back pedaling How do you go from “And this guy didn’t rape me, but he made a certain difficult decision to go on tour with him really hard. Because I knew if I did, I’d be getting more of the same weird treatment I’d been getting from him’ to no I was never touched or felt uncomfortable, i just know people who have experienced it. :-/

    • Corey Pierce

From the episode it’s clear something happened. Perhaps as much as being hit on in a creepy way while he was married. That’s not backpedaling. It’s the gossip sites that took her first comments and made them more than she meant.

      • Jay Dee

NOT in a creepy way, she just said hit on. It was

inappropriate because he was married. DOESNT MEAN it’s inappropriate to ever hit on someone….

    • Michael Crosby

how is that backpedaling? he could have been keeping the harassment all verbal up until then, and just that along with the precedent he set with other women made her suspicious it would have gone farther.

and even if he did and she was “backpedaling”, she shouldnt be the one you attack. shed probably only do that if she was being intimidated in some capacity. not everyone can be the brave one that sacrifices themselves for the greater good. we should be giving her support either way.

      • Jay Dee

        moron

  • Morgan Mangini

She is downplaying it now, because she did not expect the other stories to come out and people be able to identify him like they have. She still loves her career.
Telling someone that if they want to go on tour, they will have to put up with your unwanted sexual perversions is a sh**ty thing to do – you are talking about a person’s livelihood and abusing your control over it. I used to love Louis, but this is bull**it and I don’t have any respect for the scumbag anymore.

    • N

You have no idea what went down (neither do I for that matter).

      • Morgan Mangini

Yes, I have an idea – because if absolutely nothing happened- nothing would have been said. : )

        • Goynus

don’t think you understand what a rumor is.

  • NUMBERBRAND

But yet it’s ok for her to make jokes about raping little black kids like Blu Ivy.

  • Porst

Jen Kirkman is the best. I hope her career takes off. She’s getting there but she’s funny enough to be huge.

  • Hush D

I don’t know why Louis does this to up and coming women in comedy – dominance?. It is creepy and pervy and he will have to come clean about it at some point given how many women he has done this to. I am curious how he is dealing with the fact that he has probably had to curtail his apparently favorite activity given that women are coming forward now. Jen may not have been threatened but Louis’ people are certainly leveraging threats against women who talk about Louis doing this to them. He will be forgiven when he finally comes clean because while creepy, he did not rape anyone as far as we know. Whipping his wang out and masturbating or getting naked and masturbating seems to be his choice activity. Creepy and weird but forgivable I imagine. I don’t know. I am a man and this hasn’t happened to me.

  • Zekov

    Jen Kirkman is super sexist.

  • You Ain’t No Sanjaya

I’m sure it’s a very hard line to walk, being a fellow artist and trying to support other artists, piers, who are engaged in honest exploration of difficult, uncomfortable feelings, and being strong enough to defend your own boundaries and shut down boundary invaders who are taking advantage and not respecting the other artist in that equation.

In any event, she’s pretty funny and I’m surprised I never hear about her other than in connection with the “possibly” Louis CK “possibly took it out and masterbated in front of her.
