Florida woman dies after smuggling crack pipe into jail in her vagina

April Rollison Mug Shot

Florida woman April Rollison died in the custody of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office after apparently ingesting the crack cocaine she smuggled into the county jail.

The 31-year-old, shown above in a previous mug shot, was arrested on Dec. 16 for drug charges, according to The Ledger of Lakeland. When she was being processed at the Polk County Jail, a body scan showed two items were in her vagina. She was then transported to a regional medical center to have the items removed. Once there, she was allowed to briefly “use the restroom” when unattended.

“While the nurse was getting the bedpan … she was able to remove it from her personal area,” police spokesman Scott Wilder said, explaining they believe April then took 2 grams of crack cocaine that had been inside a pill bottle. Traces of the substance were later found on the hospital floor.

Authorities didn’t realize it at the time, so another item was removed from April and she was sent back to jail. At that point, she went into medical distress. She was rushed back to the hospital, where she remained in critical condition until dying six days later. Her exact cause of death is under investigation, but preliminary tests show she had methamphetamine, amphetamine, cocaine and marijuana in her system. Several independent and internal investigations are also ongoing.
