Finances for Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation scrutinized

Lady Gaga Born This Way Foundation

Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation spent 370 times more than it actually donated in 2012, the charity’s financial report shows.

Lady Gaga launched the not-for-profit organization in 2011 to “foster a more accepting society, where differences are embraced and individuality is celebrated.” Despite that bold mission statement, The New York Post reports only one $5,000 grant was handed out during the charity’s first full year.

In contrast, the organization spent a combined $1.85 million in legal fees, strategic development, philanthropic consulting, bus-tour production, research, travel, publicity and events.

Still, with $2.65 million in revenue, the Born This Way Foundation remained in the green — largely because neither Lady Gaga nor her parents (who serve as executives) were paid for their work.

Despite the small grant amount, the charity was able to serve its mission with a “Born to Be Brave” 23-event bus tour. The foundation was also able to connect with people in need via social media, meetings and more. None of which were reflected in the grant total, which means the “charity” total is skewed.
