Promotional images from Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland have been slowly leaking out to tease an anxious audience into a frenzy. From the looks of the few images we’ve seen, it has the candy-colored surreal ambiance as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Edward Sissorhands.

Tweedledum and Tweedledee are my least favorite of the new images. They look too much like this creepy “Charlie Brown is a monster” image that’s been around the nets lately. I would prefer more “goof” and less “eww” from them.

The pics of Anne Hathaway as the White Queen are simply stunning, and I love the china-doll look of Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen. Alice herself, played by Mia Wasikowska, is unremarkable looking. She has a bland pale beauty that isn’t inhanced by the dramatic makeup or flashy costumes. She dons the obligatory blue frock, which in the top picture does have a bit of a makeover, while she stands on the saucer, or posing mildly with a rabbit. This is about right though, because Alice, herself, is not supposed to be fantastic. She is a regular girl from the regular, boring world, where she blends in quite nicely and is often ignored. It is Wonderland that Alice sticks out.

Johnny Depp’s mad hatter is over-the-top, and I think I like it. It’s the orange hair that really does it, because otherwise he would look just like same-old Johnny-Depp-in-a-Tim-Burton-movie character. Thanks for spicing it up a bit, Tim.

Tim Burton is scheduled to show a 3-D “semi-trailer” for Alice in Wonderland Thursday at San Diego’s 2009 Comic Con.

Are you excited yet? I am, just a little. I’ve always had a thing for Alice and her curious imagination. Let’s hope Tim Burton’s whacked-out imagination does her (and Lewis Carroll) well.
