One year after Mackenzie McKee told us she didn’t plan on having any more children because of the challenges her Type 1 diabetes creates during pregnancy, the newlywed shocked us all by announcing she is expecting her second child. Now the 19-year-old is revealing we weren’t the only ones surprised by her decision: To get pregnant again, Mackenzie went against her doctor’s advice.
“I’m very scared. My doctors didn’t want me to go through this again, but really if you look at it in the long run, it’s way better to have kids young while my body’s still somewhat healthier than waiting until I was older,” Mackenzie told Life & Style.
Although Mackenzie and husband Josh McKee were able to conceive, the pregnancy has proven difficult for the petite mother. She’s been hospitalized for low blood sugar and has suffered a few other scary incidents in her own home.
“Blood sugar just bottomed out in the bath. I thinkn (sic) I almost died but my mommy took care of me,” she tweeted in August.
Her brittle diabetes didn’t seem to be any better controlled earlier this month, when Mackenzie wrote on Facebook, “It’s 6 a.m. and my blood sugar decided to bottom out and I tried very hard waking Josh up to get me food and he wouldn’t budge… Ehh so I just crawled to the kitchen and made a bowl of cereal spilling stuff everywhere from being so week.”
Unfortunately, the biggest risks are still ahead — as Mackenzie very well knows. According to sources, she actually suffered a late-term miscarriage before getting pregnant with Gannon. Even if she carries the baby to term, Mackenzie told Life & Style she could potentially slip into a coma during labor.
“My blood sugar could get so low that I pass out — and won’t wake up,” said the mother of 2-year-old Gannon.
In spite of it all, Mackenzie said she stands by her decision to expand the family.
“I think being a mom is one of the most powerful things and you have so much hope.”
