Real Housewives of New Jersey stars Jacqueline and Chris Laurita have publicly shared their struggles with their autistic son Nicholas, and on Sunday night’s new episode, Chris revealed that doctors had actually advised Jacqueline to terminate her pregnancy with Nicholas when no heartbeat was found at a doctor’s appointment.

Jacqueline had gone through five miscarriages before she became pregnant with Nicholas. “He was a miracle baby,” Chris related to Joe Gorga during an emotional pool game. “When we got pregnant with Nick, we went to the doctor to get a checkup and there was no heartbeat. And the doctor said ‘Look, you’re having another miscarriage, you have to terminate the pregnancy, and Jacqueline was like ‘Listen, the answer’s no. I’m not terminating the pregnancy right now.'”

Thankfully, Nicholas was born a healthy baby boy, but pretty soon Jacqueline suspected that her son was showing signs of autism when he stopped saying “I love you.”

When Hurricane Sandy hit, Jacqueline was able to spend a lot of time with now 3-year-old Nicholas because his school was not in session, and says he’s made some vast improvements. She also credits his 11-year-old brother CJ with helping Nicholas, writing on Parenting.com “He’s the understanding, patient, loving big brother. It’s remarkable how he gets Nick to laugh and make good eye contact. Even more amazing, Nicholas calls CJ by name, which is just incredible to hear.”

On tonight’s episode, Nicholas was able to say “I love you,” again. It was a heartwarming surprise that gave Jacqueline immense hope for the possibilities of the future.
