Nat Geo WILD’s Favorite Veterinarian Comes to the Rescue of Sick and Injured Animals in the New Summer Season of The Incredible Dr. Pol
Nat Geo WILD’s No. 1 Series The Incredible Dr. Pol Returns Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, at 9 PM ET/PT
(WASHINGTON, D.C. — July 21, 2014) Veterinarian Jan Pol has won over audiences with his no-nonsense approach to veterinary medicine — treating furry friends with unmatched compassion, humor and expertise. With thousands of clients ranging from large-scale farm animals to teacup-size household pets, he expertly balances the physical strains of birthing a cow with the surgical precision of suturing a shih tzu’s eye socket. This summer, he returns in a new season on Nat Geo WILD’s No. 1 series, The Incredible Dr. Pol, premiering Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Additionally, his new book, “Never Turn Your Back on an Angus Cow,” hits the stands Aug. 18, chronicling his life from childhood in the Netherlands up to the local hero he is today. The summer season brings a new roster of sick, injured, oozing, kicking and biting cases. We’ll join the good doctor as he travels across the Michigan countryside, making house calls to a variety of farm animals. Whether it’s treating a cow for a deadly gastric infection, castrating a guinea pig, performing a complex feline amputation or providing a hoarse horse with some much-needed dental work, Dr. Pol and his team will do everything possible to aid sick animals, no matter how bad they smell or how hard they resist.
Back at the clinic, Dr. Pol also treats a wide array of household pets and odd animal ailments with his right-hand team, including his wife, Diane, the office manager; Dr. Brenda Grettenberger, Dr. Pol’s long-time colleague; and Dr. Pol’s son Charles, who helps with the workload and farm calls. Nat Geo WILD’s cameras follow the day-to-day operations of the clinic, offering a firsthand look at what makes “The Incredible Dr. Pol” just so incredible.
Some of the cases are minor, but often owners come to Dr. Pol in times of crisis, when their furry friends are in desperate need of serious medical attention. When a family’s beloved cat is brutally shot, Dr. Pol springs into action, performing a complex amputation to save the feline’s life. When an Australian shepherd comes in with a mysterious condition that is causing its skin to turn black, the team works hard to quickly diagnose the strange problem. In each episode, the stories can be heartbreaking, inspiring and truly unbelievable.
Episodes include:
The Incredible Dr. Pol: “Piggin’ Out”
Premieres Saturday, August 23, 2014, at 9/8c
It’s a day of firsts at the clinic — Dr. Pol performs his first-ever guinea pig castration and Dr. Brenda saves the life of a 1-day-old calf with a dislocated hip. Then, it’s off to the rescue of 11 tiny piglets that are starving to death. An infection is preventing their mother from nursing properly. The vets can treat the infection, but to save the newborns they’ll need to locate a “wet nurse” to sub in for the mother. Unfortunately, not every story has such a happy ending. When a desperate dog owner seeks Dr. Pol’s expertise for his ailing best friend, x-rays confirm the pet has a terminal tumor.
The Incredible Dr. Pol: “The Amazing Dr. Brenda”
Premieres Saturday, August 30, 2014, at 9/8c
Dr. Brenda has been a staple at Pol Veterinary services for more than 21 years. Not only is she a trusted colleague to Dr. Pol, she is a well-respected veterinarian in the community, which wasn’t always the case — right out of college, some of the local farmers gave her a hard time for being a woman. In this episode, her expertise is put to the test when a baby bunny is plagued with a case of deadly diarrhea, a hoarse horse needs some dreaded dental work, and an Australian shepherd has a mysterious alignment that is causing its skin to rip, ooze and turn black. After a long, exhausting week, the clinic ladies head out for a night of food, fun and friends as Dr. Brenda, Andrea and Melissa hit the dance floor — a much-needed escape from the hustle and bustle of the clinic.
The Incredible Dr. Pol: “Puppy Love”
Premieres Saturday, September 6, 2014, at 9/8c
Every so often there are cases that send shockwaves through Dr. Pol’s entire clinic. When a beloved family cat is brutally shot, Dr. Pol is forced to perform a complex amputation to save the feline’s life. The owners have no idea who would shoot their pet, or why. But one thing is certain: This senseless act of violence has everyone involved on edge. Later, Dr. Brenda gets a much lighter case. Two adorable 1-week-old husky pups have a mysterious skin infection on their bellies. While the pet owners are concerned the irritation is something serious, Dr. Brenda happily reports the problem is very minor — the pups’ mom is just licking them too much! Also in this episode, Dr. Pol treats a bloated calf with a problem much worse than a bellyache, Dr. Brenda deals with a snarly dog that has a gnarly hot spot on his cheek, and Charles plans a surprise anniversary getaway for his parents.
