Cocaine was once Lady Gaga’s best friend

Lady Gaga has talked about her past cocaine use before, lamenting that it’s the “devil,” and now she’s speaking out some more about her bad romance with the white powdered stimulant.

She told Amanda de Cadenet on The Conversation that when she was 19 and depressed she would only do cocaine by herself, and that it became her friend when she was lonely.

“It was like the drug was my friend. I never did it with other people. It’s such a terrible way to fill that void, because it just adds to that void, because it’s not real.”

She would turn on the television just so she could hear other people, and was listening to a lot of The Cure. Eventually Gaga realized that the drug was holding her back creatively and destroying her life.

“I sort of f**king woke up one day and was like, ‘You’re an asshole. You’re not an artist. If you were a real f**king artist, you’d be focused on your music. You wouldn’t be spending your money on the white devil.”

She didn’t beat the white devil entirely by herself. She also credits her dad with helping her see what she was doing to herself.

In 2009 Gaga described her father’s confrontation, which really struck a chord with her, and was instrumental to her kicking the habit:

“My father is a really powerful man, a telecom guy. So he looked at me one day and said, “You’re f***in’ up, kid.” And I looked at him and thought, “How does he know that I’m high right now?”

And he never said a word about the drugs, not one word. But he said, “I just wanna tell you that anyone you meet while you’re like this, and any friend that you make in the future while you are with this thing, you will lose. And we never talked about it again.’
