Azealia Banks thinks she should be able to say ‘fa**ot’ if gay men can say ‘b**ch’

Azealia-Banks-Homophobic-Question

I’ll be honest, even though I’m in the business of keeping up with entertainment, I’m not really sure who Azealia Banks is beyond a rapper who’s in a feud with Iggy Azalea. And, now, who is making an argument about why she should be able to use the word “fa**ot.”

This gets a bit complicated, so I’ll try to explain as best as I can: Earlier this week, Azealia posted a “#whiteface” photo to Instagram, which got some people riled up.

“Yall really r hype. This is not white face this is my Ice Princess makeup. Calm tf down LOL,” she tweeted on Monday. She went on to take specific issue with how the “gay media” was reporting it, saying, “Gay media has to stop using homophobia as a means to try and victimize itself and scar the names of its opponents… Phobia would imply that I am scared of gay men or dislike them because of what they choose to do sexually… I promise, no one gives a f**k what u decide to do in your private lives.”

But that didn’t settle matters, especially for Vice associate editor Mitchell Sunderland, who got into an all-out war of words on Azealia on Twitter. In a post about their fight, Mitchell said Azealia tweeted and deleted, “Why has society accepted ‘ni**er’ as a colloquialism… But will not accept ‘fa**ot’?”

After that article was published, Azealia tweeted, “But I love how you guys completely ignored to corny gay blogger who tried to come for me and once again made it about me attacking gays.” So, that’s basically how her initial post about “white face” became a fight with the LGBT community. That’s apparently also why she decided to write an Instagram post titled “Azealia Banks is Homophobic 1.”

Why is it okay… For a gay man to colloquially use the word “B**ch” to refer to women, but is it not okay for me to colloquially use the word “Fa**ot” to refer to myself or an opponent? Do gay men get a special pass to say misogynist things simply because they Like d**k? The argument is that countless gay kids hear the word “fa**ot” before they are beat to death… But do you know how many women hear the word “B**ch” before their husbands beat them to death? Before they are murdered/raped…?

Some in the LGBT community tweeted their support. Jezebel‘s Rohin G even shared several articles he’s written about “gay male privilege” with Azealia, who retweeted the posts. Still, not surprisingly, most of the reactions to the post were negative and/or respectful disagreements.

Do you think Azealia is being inappropriate or making a valid argument?
