Taylor Swift buys two porn domain names (but it’s not what you think)
If you were looking forward to snatching TaylorSwift.porn or TaylorSwift.adult when those sites were to go on sale, you’ll have to find another hot young celebrity to troll. In a savvy move that first raised eyebrows before it got hands clapping, Taylor Swift bought both domains this week, taking advantage of a grace period during which celebrities and companies can take control of potentially adult-based websites before trolls get their grubby troll hands on them.
The broader story is that on June 1st, .porn and .adult domain names will go on sale for the first time. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which is the governing body in charge of such sales, has granted a roughly two-month window for big brands and corporations to save, for example, TaylorSwift.porn, thus ensuring that no one will ever go there actually expecting to see Taylor Swift engaging in pornographic acts. She’s hardly the only one getting into this game: The Onion AV Club reports that Microsoft Office, for example, has done the same thing as T-Swift, nabbing Office.porn and Office.adult for themselves though it’s fairly unlikely that anyone would have gone there looking for Microsoft Office-based porn in the first place.
On an odd and related note? Hardly any big names are buying up the .sucks domain, because no one wants to be associated with sucking. Except for porn empresarios. So, there’ll likely be a rush to get TaylorSwift.sucks on June 1st, if porn logic holds.
Here’s a list of all the new domains you can expect to see in the coming months. Some of them are downright goofy: .bingo is one; .smile is another. The release date for .sex has yet to be announced.
