Could ‘Fast Five’ be next year’s Oscar darling?

The latest installment of The Fast and the Furious franchise Fast Five is ripping up the box office once again proving that pumped dudes, hot babes, explosions and fast cars are as close to a sure thing as you can get in Hollywood.  It red lined out of the gate with an 80+ million dollar opening weekend which is the best of any of the films.

In a recent fantastic piece from the Los Angeles Times they analyze the continued success of the films that America can’t seem to get enough of in spite of predictably harsh reviews from critics.  In summary professors, actors in the film and even film critic Leonard Maltin all come to the same obvious conclusion; these films tap into many passions of the blue collar American.  No. Really?

Anyways, in this write up is a rather interesting quote from the film’s lead ripped actor Vin Diesel.  #Vinning believes that there very well could be an Oscar buzz next time around for Fast Five!  Here’s the direct quote:

“I wouldn’t be surprised if there is some Oscar talk around this. I don’t know, maybe I’m just biting off what some guy from Channel 7 thought,” he said with a chuckle. “But sooner or later, people are gonna say, ‘Wait a minute, just because they are for the working class doesn’t mean they’re not great.'”

Okay mystery person from Channel 7, you better come out and defend your position that this film will be an Oscar darling because now you got Diesel believing.  In the end when you put together a high budget action flick the game is to entertain your audience and to make some serious box office bank.  Oscar or not (definitely not) by those standards Fast Five is a freaking masterpiece.
