California man arrested for placing pipe bomb under ex-wife’s car
28-year-old Steven Sunny from Victorville, California was arrested Monday for placing a pipe bomb underneath his ex-wife’s vehicle at a shopping center in Redlands.
Hundreds of shoppers had to be evacuated after the bomb was discovered in the parking lot of the Redlands Town Center. A 911 call was placed around 1 p.m. local time about the suspicious looking item.
ABC7 reports that police stated the couple’s two young children were inside the vehicle when the bomb was discovered. A bomb squad team used a robot device to remove the device and safely detonated it behind the businesses in the area.
No one was injured and shoppers who had been evacuated were able to return at around 5 p.m. to retrieve their vehicles.
Sunny was arrested at the home of his girlfriend, a San Bernardino trailer park, Monday evening.
Redlands Police Spokesman Carl Baker said, “We’re pretty clear that the woman was targeted by her ex-husband. This ties in to a domestic dispute.”
Sunny was arrested and charged with 3 counts of attempted murder. He was held at the San Bernardino County Jail on a $1 million bond.
