Are Tina Fey and Amy Poehler best friends in real life?
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are hosting the Golden Globes for the second year in a row, and they are so adorable together it’s almost too much. Are these two BFFs in real life?
YES, and they’ve been buddies ever since they met over 20 years ago in 1993 at an improv class at Chicago’s ImprovOlympic. “I remember Tina Fey wrote a play about Catherine the Great f**king a horse and I thought, ‘That lady is hot stuff, I wanna know her,'” Amy Poehler recalled about her friend crush on Tina.
Eventually they both landed spots in Second City Touring Company, but Amy had main spot with Second City first. When she moved to New York with her sketch group the Upright Citizens Brigade in 1996, Tina was promoted to Amy’s spot. The next year Tina herself moved to NYC to write for Saturday Night Live. After years of pressuring Amy to join SNL, she finally caved in 2001.
Tina: “I would say to her for years do you want to come be on SNL and she’ll be like no no, love UCB. And then she was like well, maybe now. I can’t believe it worked out.”
By 2004 they were co-anchoring Weekend Update together, and they’ve worked on many big projects together including Baby Mama, Mean Girls, and of course, The Golden Globes.
“The 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards” hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler airs Sunday January 12 8pm ET/5pm PT
