Wave of Money: Frank Black tells it to us straight

To preface this post, let’s set one thing straight: The Pixies made some of the best American music ever recorded about 20 years ago, and in case you need some examples there are educational videos below.
The Pixies headman Frank Black, who performed as Black Francis for years before he struck out on a solo career, reunited with his former band last summer at the Isle of Wight festival for a memorable 80-minute set that rocked the festival and left hungry Pixies fans weak with pleasure. It went so well that that the group stayed together for a string of fall ’09 tour dates, and apparently not only were the fans excited, but the price was right.
The group had reunited once before in 2004, but split again in ’08, and Black is frank about why they got together again in ’09 and it’s not about art or friendship. It’s about the money.
He told The Quietus (via ContactMusic):
“We’re interested in anything that’s going to earn us a fair wage. It’s not to say it’s not about art, but we made that art f**king twenty years ago. So forget the f**king goddamn art.
This ain’t about the art anymore. I did the arty farty part. Now it’s time to talk about the money.”
Now that’s a breath of refreshing air cooled with the chill of comeback cash: A musician who’s made some really great (and underrated) music in his career is being open and honest about working for a payday.
As Kelly Cutrone says, we’re all hookers. But if you’re Frank Black, you get to say that the tricks you’ve had to turn have been pretty sweet.
