Lady Gaga performed a Wizard of Oz take on her “Applause” single today on GMA, and it was super cute. I’ve been afraid that Gaga’s been taking herself too seriously with ARTPOP, but this performance was so adorable, I’m back on board.
Something odd happened, though. She appears to have used a Perez Hilton look-a-like as her cowardly lion. Part of me thinks it might actually be him:
The singer teased the performance on Twitter and Facebook. Sept. 6 she tweeted:
“When Dorothy goes GLAM
snatches all the weaves of OZ
outsmarting the Wicked West
as she thrills for your APPLAUSE!”
She gave an after performance interview with Lara and Robin where she explained that the songs on ARTPOP are brighter and more positive than the ones on her previous album Born This Way. “When I’m in a happy place, the music is,” she says “and I have my fans to thank for that because no matter what I go through, no matter how I evolve, they always stand by me because they appreciate my point of view. That’s what ARTPOP is about, I want them to know I appreciate their point of view, and whenever you’re harnessing your talents, no matter what your talents may be, I want you to know that your talents are important. And that just because you want to be an artist and maybe not a doctor or a nurse or a teacher, it doesn’t mean that it’s less than that, it doesn’t mean that you still can’t survive. In fact in the economy that we live in it’s actually wonderful to have a niche business that has specialized things to offer. It’s much more lucrative for you in the future, actually. So please, express your talents, show who you are and express it through whatever way you want.”
The Mother Monster says the many wig and costume changes in the performance represents what she had to do to become a star, to “Get to Oz.”
