VIDEO Journey’s Steve Perry takes stage for first time in 19 years!
To all you Steve Perry fans I say don’t stop believing as I guarantee you’re gonna welcome this post with open arms!
The elusive former frontman hasn’t performed with Journey since 1991 and hasn’t graced a stage with his legendary pipes since 1995. But oh Sherry, Perry finally returned to the stage Sunday night as he joined The Eels at their show at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Perry first performed The Eel’s song “It’s a Motherf***er” and received thunderous applause from the crowd of nearly 1,000. Eel’s leader Mark Everett joked, “They don’t applaud like that for me! I guess I gotta disappear for 25 years!”
Then, then – The Eels and Perry blew the audience’s minds as they performed Journey classics “Open Arms” and “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’.”
The following is an audience recording but Perry’s piercing vocals come through and for a one off performance he sounded awesome!
Rumors of a reunion have come and gone during Perry’s long hiatus and with this successful resurface of the lead singer they will certainly rise again. Journey’s Neal Schon shot down the most recent intonations in an interview with Billboard stating simply that any reunion rumors were untrue.
Perry has struggled with health issued including ongoing arthritis, hip-replacement surgery in 1998 and two melanoma-removal surgeries in 2013. He’s said to have dozens of originals he’s been working on but has blamed delays to his own perfectionism. Rolling Stone reported last year that Perry was working and recording with Southern California’s AWOL Nation.
