Pierce Brosnan has lost his 41-year-old daughter Charlotte to ovarian cancer, the same disease that her mother died from in 1991.

The 60-year-old actor confirmed this sad news in a statement:

“On June 28 at 2pm my darling daughter Charlotte Emily passed on to eternal life, having succumbed to ovarian cancer.

“Charlotte fought her cancer with grace and humanity, courage and dignity. Our hearts are heavy with the loss of our beautiful dear girl.

“We pray for her and that the cure for this wretched disease will be close at hand soon. We thank everyone for their heartfelt condolences.”

Charlotte is survived by her two children Isabella, 15, and Lucas, eight, and partner Alex Smith.

Charlotte’s mother, Cassandra Harris, was Pierce’s first wife, and passed away when she was 43. Charlotte’s grandmother also passed away from the disease. Pierce adopted Charlotte and her brother Christopher when their father died, and they took on the Brosnan last name. Pierce and Cassandra had a son together, named Sean.

In the 2012 film Love is All You Need, Brosnan played a man who falls in love with a woman who has cancer. “I was fully aware of the notes within the piece that chimed with my own life, having lost a wife to cancer,” he said. “Of course. That was part of the seduction of it, and the charm of it.”

“I’ve sat in rooms with doctors and awaited the outcome of examinations, for results to come back. I’ve opened letters with bad news in them. I know what it’s like, I really do. Cancer is a very sad thing but you can always take something from every experience. This film is proof of that. I’ve always been a positive thinker. I suppose Keely is my North Star, always looking out for me. And I guess that makes me more thankful and more up for it, up for taking on whatever life throws at me and whatever parts my career now puts my way.”

Bronsnan has two children (Dylan, 16 and Paris, 12) with his second wife Keely Shaye Smith, an American journalist he met in 1994, and married in 2001.
