PHOTOS Zoe Kravitz as Angel Salvadore (Tempest) in X-Men: First Class
As the release date for the much-anticipated super-hero super-flick X-Men: First Class draws nigh more images are coming out featuring the characters from the film in costume. We’ve already done a couple posts on January Jones’ lingerie-clad Emma Frost, but we have yet to highlight the little winged wonder Angel Salvadore, played by Zoë Kravitz!
Mutant Angel has a lot of the attributes of a house fly including tattooed wings on her upper arms that can morph into real wings, giving her the power of flight. She also possesses the slightly less sexy power of projectile vomiting acidic fluid, which she uses for digestion as well as a weapon when necessary. Here’s an international character poster featuring Zoë Kravitz as Angel Salvadore in which you get a good look at the elaborate wing design on her arm:
When asked in an interview with IGN to describe her character, Zoë said:
I play Angel Salvadore, and I’m a go-go dancer who can fly. I have a pair of tattooed wings on my back, which turn into insect wings, and I projectile vomit acid.
[SPOILER ALERT] In the film Zoë’s character seems partial to the more aggressive equality philosophy of Sebastian Shaw (played by Kevin Bacon). In the IGN interview Zoë likens the philosophical choice to that of picking Martin Luther King, Jr. or Malcom X:
She starts out on the good side with Professor X and Magneto – they recruit her to be an X-Man, and then she switches to Sebastian Shaw’s side to be in Hellfire. I think it’s just a different approach to fighting for human equality. Someone compared the two different sides. In this film it’s Hellfire and the X-Men, but later it’s Xavier and Magneto and someone compared it to Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. They’re really fighting for the same thing, but it’s different approaches for how to get there. I think she just believes that the aggressive side is the right side.
[END SPOILER ALERT]
Zoë Kravitz says Kevin Bacon is “freakishly wonderful” and director Matthew Vaughn is “amazing and a really cool guy.” And as far as the period 1960s attire worn in the film, Zoë seemed to like that as well:
It’s really cool. The ’60s is one of my favorite eras in general. I love ’60s music and I’ve always wanted to do a period film. It’s really cool, the combination of the action and the CGI stuff. I have the least lines out of all those guys but probably the best costumes! All my costumes are backless because of the wings and they made me this really cool metal dress. I have a pretty cool leather cat suit too. That’s kind of my signature look.

Although it probably won’t come into play in X-Men: First Class, another of Angel’s fly characteristics is that she lays eggs with a gestation period of only five days from conception to birth, something that actually happens when she and Xavier Institute beau Beak hook up and have six children together.
