Madonna and her “rebel heart” have been growing out their armpit hair lately. And, because it wouldn’t be fashion without making a statement, the Material Girl shared a shot of her furry pits with her 1.4 million Instagram followers.
“Long hair…… Don’t Care!!!!!! #artforfreedom #rebelheart #revolutionoflove,” Madonna said in the image’s caption.
The description references the Art for Freedom global initiative, which encourages creative expression with the goal of bringing awareness to human rights violations. The project was created by Madonna and Vice and features monthly guest curators.
It’s actually a very cool, innovative method — with much better examples of art than what Madonna offered on Thursday. (No offense if you’re really into braidable underarm hair.)
Madonna previously said she boycotted shaving during high school because she wanted to do the opposite of popular girls.
“I refused to wear makeup, to have a hairstyle. I refused to shave. I had hairy armpits,” Madonna told Harper’s Bazaar in 2011. “The boys in my school would make fun of me. ‘Hairy monster’ … I’ve always asked, ‘Why? Why do I have to do that? Why do I have to look this way? Why do I have to dress this way? Why do I have to behave this way?'”
