Ever since Taryn Manning–best-known as Pennsatucky on Orange is the New Black–addressed the possibility of Britney Spears joining the cast for Season Four of the Netflix hit, the internet has been awash with “Britney Spears Orange Is The New Black” rumors. The two starred together in the 2002 hit Crossroads, and Manning is now clamoring for a reunion.
“Of course, I want Britney Spears everywhere you can see her,” said Manning, when Entertainment Tonight brought up the possibility before the 2015 Emmy Awards. “She’s the best.”
In fact, Manning was so complimentary of Spears that she said she thinks the 33-year-old could fit into any role the writers came up with. “I don’t have to make up a character–she’s such a good actor that I feel like they could do anything with her,” Manning gushed. “I was so impressed working with her I was like–she’s just very sincere in her acting, you know? It’s like everyone wanted to maybe hope that she’s not gonna be good but she was great.”
Of course, in addition to her film roles, Spears is no stranger to television. She’s hosted or been the musical act (or both) on three episodes of Saturday Night Live; she drew widespread acclaim for her portrayal of Abby on How I Met Your Mother; she was a smash as Amber-Louise on Will & Grace before that, and on Glee since. And, this year, Spears will guest star on at least one episode of Jane The Virgin. So the “Britney Spears Orange is the New Black” rumors might not be too much of a stretch.
The real difficulty, it would seem, would be accomodating Spears’ busy performance schedule. The star is under contract through 2017 for her elaborate Las Vegas residency: the Planet Hollywood show “Britney: Piece of Me.” Spears is required to perform around fifty shows per year, at strategically relevant dates that the venue chooses ahead of time.
Fifty might not sound like a lot, but, because they don’t all come in a stretch, it’s not clear whether Spears’ schedule has the flexibility necessary to accomodate a long television shoot, as well. Case in point: Orange is the New Black is shooting Season Four right now, and Spears has dates booked in the middle of October, November, and December.
