Guy Fieri to wed 101 gay couples in South Beach

Chef Guy Fieri launches a new Las Vegas restaurant

Chef Art Smith, host of the inaugural 101 Gay Weddings event taking place during the South Beach Wine & Food Festival, decided that he needed to do something even bigger and grander for the first-time shindig. So he decided to ask fellow celebrity chef Guy Fieri to officiate each wedding.

Smith generally hosts a Big Gay Ice Cream Social every year during the SBWFF, in order to raise awareness of (and money for) the gay rights struggle. This year, though, gay marriage is legal in Florida. So Smith decided to go a bit bigger, and a bit gayer, for the brand-new event.

Maybe the best part? Duff Goldman from Ace of Cakes is making a custom wedding cake for the event. And some of South Florida’s most famous chefs are cooking up the dinner to take place after. Smith selected the 101 couples during a Twitter contest involving the hashtag #101GayWeddings. And he’s throwing this deal at the James Royal Palm. No word on whether the selected couples have to pay for any of this stuff, but here’s hoping it’s a totally free soiree.

Fieri himself, who was accused of homophobia during a DDD taping in 2011, has not commented publicly, except to say that he will also be hosting tonight’s “Meatopia” event.

Would you want Guy Fieri to officiate your wedding?
