Is MTV going to cancel Teen Mom Young and Pregnant?
The cast members of Teen Mom: Young and Pregnant were in New York City this weekend to tape their Reunion special, and after they were through, some of the social media posts seemed to suggest that this might be the show’s last season.
“Well ladies, here goes my heartfelt post about what an honor its been to be apart of a tv show with you girls,” mom Ashley Jones captioned a group photo of all the moms together. “So grateful that our cast is full of love and understanding, and when times get hard we all reach out ❤️❤️.”
Ashley continues: “It’s been a long emotional journey. But that’s a wrap ❤️ wouldn’t have done it any other way.”
Ashley’s co-star Brianna Jaramillo wrote “I’m gonna miss you ?” in the comments, and Ashley responded by assuring Brianna: “you can always call me babe ❤️ I love you mucho mucho ❤️ and if you ever need a break you can fedex Braeson overnight , I’ll keep him ????❤️❤️❤️.”
“??? I will lol,” Brianna replied. “And I will reach out. And you can too! ?”
Brianna posted the same photo on her Instagram account and captioned it with a similarly suggestive caption:
Ladies I am honored to have had the chance to work with you all! ? you are all amazing mothers and women in general. I hope this isn’t goodbye but just see you later. ??
The other moms shared lots of photos from this weekend, and even said their goodbyes, but their parting words didn’t seem as potentially final as Ashley and Brianna’s.
In summary, it sounds as though the cast has been told by MTV that they are not sure if the show will be back, and they might have gone so far as to say it doesn’t look good. That would certainly seem to line up with the show’s ratings this season, which have been substantially down from the second-half finish for the spin-off’s inaugural run.
As we previously reported, the youngest sibling in the Teen Mom franchise really struggled for the first half of Season 1, at which point it was following Teen Mom OG — as it is this season. Then, when Teen Mom OG ended and Young and Pregnant began airing after Teen Mom 2, the ratings took a huge turn upwards. I speculated at the time that the Young and Pregnant cast drama seemed to be more in line with Teen Mom 2 than the older and less dramatic Teen Mom OG, and perhaps that bad synergy is having a similar effect this season.
Here are the ratings for every episode of Teen Mom: Young and Pregnant so far:
SEASON 1
MARCH 12 – 666,000 (following Teen Mom OG)
MARCH 19 – 602,000
MARCH 26 – 534,000
APRIL 2 – 593,000
APRIL 9 – 718,000
APRIL 16 – 685,000 (following Teen Mom OG Reunion Part 1)
APRIL 23 – 708,000 (following Teen Mom OG Reunion Part 2)
APRIL 30 – 609,000 (following Teen Mom OG Unseen Moments)
MAY 7 – 854,000 (following Teen Mom 2 premiere)
MAY 14 – 818,000
MAY 21 – 901,000
MAY 28 – 672,000 (Memorial Day, so most all viewership numbers were down)
JUNE 4 – 838,000
JUNE 11 – 873,000
JUNE 18 – No new episode
JUNE 25 – 827,000 (Reunion Episode)
SEASON 2 (following Teen Mom OG)
OCTOBER 15 – 646,000
OCTOBER 22 – 608,000
OCTOBER 29 – 575,000
NOVEMBER 5 – 508,000
NOVEMBER 12 – 556,000
Under 600,000 seems way too low to justify a renewal, but I am guessing that MTV is holding out to see if the show can once again rebound. I will be curious to see if MTV maybe switches up the show’s night in hopes of breaking the tie with Teen Mom OG. As TLC’s popular Unexpected series can attest, audiences are still hungry to see stories about teen mothers, but viewers of the ten-year-old original Teen Mom series might not be as excited to go through it all again.
Personally, I really like the show, and I think it is on par with Unexpected. So, it’s unfortunate that it isn’t finding its audience.
But before I get ahead of myself, the show has not been canceled yet, and the cast just met up for a Reunion show that was sure to be full of fireworks! Oh, and the moms looked GREAT! So I will cross my fingers for a new season and leave you with a collection of photos and videos posted by cast over the weekend:
Catch new episodes of Teen Mom: Young and Pregnant airing Monday nights at 10/9c on MTV.
