Boy George confirms Culture Club reunion

It’s a miracle!  Well maybe not that important but it’s been over 8 years since the original members of the British band Culture Club have performed together.  Lead singer turned DJ, Boy George has confirmed that there will be a Culture Club reunion and that the deadline date is April 30th, 2012.  This date is significant in that it represents the 30th anniversary of the release of the band’s first single, “White Boy.”

The British lads, George O’Dowd (Boy George), Roy Hay, Mikey Craig, Jon Moss and Sam Baker burst onto the musical landscape in the early 80’s with an infectious pop blend of British new wave, American soul and Jamaican reggae.  It was also fortitous that their music career coincided with the rise of music videos via MTV.  George’s eye-popping flamboyant look stood out and made their videos events unto themselves.  There was always something intriguing and interesting about a Culture Club video.

George stated:

“We’re definitely doing it, yeah, yeah, in 2012. Our D-Day is April 30, which is the same day as our first ever single release, ‘White Boy’, and yeah, we’re doing it, it’s going to be great fun.  If we don’t do it now we’ll do it when we’re 60, which will be really tragic. In fact, when I do this tour next year I will be 50 officially, because I’m 50 on the 14 of June, in eight months time!”

If Culture Club was before your time or you just want to remember the good ol’ days when MTV aired music videos here is a clip of the band’s highest charting single in the U.S., “Karma Chameleon.”

George also commented on Lady Gaga who currently carries the baton of “fashion envelope pushing pop star” that George once held.

“I think you have to kind of really push the envelope now to kind of really make a difference. I suppose Gaga would be a good example, but yeah, I think you have to really literally wear lobsters on your head or telephones.”

I hope George sticks to his guns and that the band returns to the stage.  If he doesn’t I would be forced to ask him, “Do you really want to hurt me?”
