After Ariana Grande’s first apology for her behavior in an L.A. doughnut shop left most people with sour tastes in their mouths, she tried to explain herself again.
Both apologies stem from an incident last weekend. Security cameras at Wolfee Donuts caught Ariana and her boyfriend apparently spitting on and licking doughnuts and putting them back. (The store owner said they sold out that day, so: eww.)
Then, when a worker brought out a new tray, Ariana clearly said, “What the f*ck is that? I hate Americans. I hate America.”
After the video leaked, Ariana said in a statement:
I am extremely proud to be an American and I’ve always made it clear that I love my country… As an advocate for healthy eating, food is very important to me and I sometimes get upset by how freely we as Americans eat and consume things without giving any thought to the consequences that it has on our health and society as a whole. The fact that the United States has the highest child obesity rate in the world frustrates me… However I should have known better in how I expressed myself; and with my new responsibility to others as a public figure I will strive to be better.
That apology didn’t sit well with many people, so Ariana followed up yesterday with a video apology.
Among other things, she said:
I feel like the apology that I posted — I kind of missed my opportunity to actually, like, sincerely apologize and express how I was feeling because I was too busy preaching about my issues with the food industry, which is not, I feel like, relative. I feel like I could’ve expressed myself in a different way, so here I am. I feel like now’s my chance, before the whole thing blows over, to say my side, and that I’ve actually never been prouder to be American, to be honest. All the advances we’ve made in the last couple of months, all the wonderful progressive things that have been going on — I’ve never been prouder of this country, actually…I’m not here to justify my behavior or make any excuses, because I can’t. I’m just here to apologize, and tell you that I love you, and I appreciate being able to talk to you like this. I’m 22 years old. I’m human. I still got a lot to learn. And I make mistakes and that’s how I’m going to learn… That’s how we grow, you know? That’s how we get better.
Although most people commenting online seem to agree it’s better Ariana actually addressed the incident herself, many are pointing out she still didn’t take responsibility for the nasty act of spitting on the doughnuts.
