Andrew Garfield wants Spider-Man to explore his sexuality with a male ‘Mary-Jane’

Even in the context of a philosophical discussion between an actor and director, Andrew Garfield’s suggestion that Spider-Man explores his sexuality with a male “Mary-Jane” is a pretty big deal.

“I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ,” Andrew, who plays Spidey in the latest series of movies, told Entertainment Weekly. “And I was like, ‘What if MJ is a dude?’ Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It’s hardly even groundbreaking… So why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?”

The move would certainly be new territory for Peter Parker, as the fictional character has traditionally been tied to women. However, it would be an ever greater leap for superhero flicks in general, which always pair the macho savior with a women. (Although we would have guessed Batman and Robin would be the first to tread these waters…)

Andrew, who is in a real-life relationship with co-star Emma Stone, even suggested an actor for the hypothetical role.

“I’ve been obsessed with Michael B. Jordan since The Wire. He’s so charismatic and talented. It’d be even better — we’d have interracial bisexuality!”

Heck, Michael B. Jordan wouldn’t even have to go by a different name to take on the MJ role! This is sounding more and more like a possibility… Especially considering Shailene Woodley, the actress formerly slated to fill the roll, was cut midway through editing for The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Unfortunately for fans eager for some Spidey Sexual Awakening, we won’t know much more about MJ for a while. The character won’t appear in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and the final two sequels aren’t set to premiere until 2016 and 2018.
