After getting teasers and snippets, the world finally has an official trailer for the already infamous film The Canyons starring Lindsay Lohan and that guy from Farrah Abraham’s porn (James Deen).

As the scene opens we hear Lindsay’s character Tara discussing movies as flashes of dilapidated theaters are shown. She’s asking someone if they still like to go and watch films when she says, “I don’t know. I guess maybe it’s just not my thing anymore.”

Dubstep drops in as we’re informed that it’s directed by Paul Schroeder (American Gigolo, Affliction) and written by Bret Easton Ellis (Less Than Zero, American Psycho). The film was snubbed by Sundance and SXSW as an insider with the latter said, “It’s got an ugliness and a deadness to it.” In spite of, or perhaps because of, the notorious stars, production tales and bickering between Schroeder and Ellis the film finds itself on many popular must-watch lists.

Ellis said of the new approach used to cast the film:

“Dealing with the casting of The Canyons was a great, liberating process–for both the production team and for actors in general. We used letitcast and saw some amazing actors that we will definitely keep in mind for future projects. The way the entire cast came together so quickly was a thrill and everyone who landed their roles deserved them. Using social media as a way to help build a film is really like riding the wave into the future.”

I can’t lie that I’m intrigued and will be catching the flick. Sure, it’s an easy snark out to say you’re not watching it because of the troubled actress and the past film work of Deen — But… Will it be a train wreck or a surprisingly good piece? It’s hard to tell, but it’s that mystery that has so many, including myself, interested.

The Canyons will be available via Video On Demand and select theaters on August 2.
