TEEN MOM OG Ryan’s parents Jen and Larry’s emotional scenes may be the best reality TV of the year

Teen Mom OG Ryan's parents Jen and Larry Edwards

It’s so easy to get caught up in the two-dimensional drama of reality television that I think we forget sometimes that these are real, three-dimensional people we are watching and reading about. Producers and the media (like Starcasm) tend to focus on the surface drama, which is like the mesmerizing and entertaining ripples created by a smooth stone skipping across a lake. We often forget about the depths below the surface — the real emotions and struggles of the real people we are watching. But, on rare occasions, reality television pauses and sinks, and sometimes the result is a brutally (and beautifully) honest portrayal of other human beings — and of ourselves.

Viewers of the current season of Teen Mom OG have been gifted with these brutal and beautiful moments in the scenes featuring Ryan Edwards’ parents Jennifer (Jen) and Larry Edwards. On the surface, there is all the drama surrounding Ryan, his wife Mackenzie, Ryan’s ex Maci, and their son Bentley. Ryan is a recovering heroin addict who left rehab early. Mackenzie comes across as an entitled and bitter person who loves the attention almost as much as she loathes Maci. Maci is a mother of three just trying to do the right thing when it comes to the safety of her son Bentley. Blah, blah, blah…

But what’s really going on? Here’s a recap of a scene from last week’s episode that does a great job of revealing the answer to that question for Ryan’s parents:

“How have things been since Ryan’s gotten home?” show producer Jeni asks Larry and Jen after Ryan’s return from rehab.

“They’ve been pretty good,” says Jen, and Larry says at the same time: “Pretty good actually.”

Larry continues: “I love the fact that if [Ryan] calls me or I call him, and he’s on the phone, I can understand every word that he says. I love it. And for the thirty days he was in rehab, it was the best I’ve ever felt because I knew he was gonna be OK. I knew that I wasn’t going to get a call and somebody tell me that I needed to come to the hospital, or whatever.”

Ryan Edwards' dad Larry quote about Bentley

As Larry talks, tears begin to flow for him, Jen, the producer, and this writer — yet again. Trying to comprehend the relief of knowing your child was going to be OK after YEARS of not knowing EVERY DAY is pretty much impossible to understand for those of us lucky enough to have not experienced it ourselves, but Larry got me pretty damn close.

“That’s scary,” Larry says of the worried days prior to Ryan entering rehab. “That’s scary.”

“I wonder every day — my guard’s always up,” Jen says about her worries for Ryan, as she continues to wipe tears away. “I’m always looking for signs of something. I don’t want something to happen and think I could have done something different.”

Larry then explains that of course he and Jen knew that “something was going on” with Ryan. “We knew that. But any time we confronted him there was two things that happened: One, there was an argument. And two, he would leave…We’re not stupid, and we’re not naive. Now, we have a few more things to kind of educate us a little bit and see, you know, what the signs are. But we had no idea what Ryan’s triggers were. Didn’t have a clue.”

Larry reveals that they have since learned what some of Ryan’s triggers are before revealing that the two main ones are when his mother Jen gets upset and when someone uses his son Bentley.

“He hates it if I’m sad or upset,” Jen says, and by now it’s more than just tears — she is obviously in a great a deal of pain. “And so I have to hold it together, which is hard.”

“You make her cry, it’s a trigger,” Larry says. “You use Bentley, it’s a trigger. So you can imagine how many triggers we’ve been fighting here lately. Yeah, it’s been tough.”

Larry then comes to the defense of his son. “But I will tell you this, I know he loves Bentley. Has he been there all the time and all that? No. But I know one thing, I know he loves him. It’s been tough. And Ryan is all we have. That is all we have. He’s ours. And we love Ryan. Always have. Always will.”

My recap cannot do the scene justice, so I encourage you to watch Season 7 Episode 4 titled “System Overload.” The scene starts at right around the 27:50 mark. Oh, and you do not have to be a fan of the show to appreciate it.

In this week’s episode, viewers saw another honest scene with Jen and Larry, although it was a little less emotional that the previous one. Jen and Larry are in the garage this time (not like Amber and Matt’s garage, but Larry’s real deal “this is where things get fixed” garage) as they address the fact that because Maci is not allowing Ryan to see Bentley until he takes a drug test, that means they haven’t been able to see Bentley either. And remember, the unofficial shared custody arrangement that has been in place for close to a decade has been with Jen and Larry (in truth) and not Ryan.

“How do you feel not seeing Bentley as much lately?” asks producer Jeni.

“Sad,” says Jen. “Very sad, because we miss him.”

“It’s like we’ve been left out,” Larry adds. “She hasn’t once come to us and asked us anything. She has three kids, a husband, and a life — but you know what? One of those kids is part of our life. If she has problems with Ryan –”

“Or if she wants certain things from Ryan,” Jen interrupts, “and he’s not giving those to her, then don’t hold it against us. We can see Bentley without Ryan being here, I don’t have a problem with that. And if Ryan’s doing anythingANYTHING — in this house and I see one sign of anything, he’s not gonna be here. She should know that Bentley’s gonna be safe here.” Jen begins to get emotional and tear up. “I would never put him in any kind of harm. Ever. I mean, I think that some of her reasoning is ‘OK, he can’t come here and maybe that will make Ryan more accountable.’ Maybe? I don’t know. But, it’s hurting Bentley really bad, and that breaks my heart.”

Jen pauses before admitting she understands where Maci is coming from. “But I mean, yeah, I know as a mom she wants the best for Bentley, and I know she’s probably scared. We’re all scared.”

Teen Mom OG Ryan Edwards' mom Jen quote about Maci

I’m not really sure how to wrap up this post. Jen and Larry are the parents of an only child who is on a hugely popular reality show because he got his 16-year-old girlfriend pregnant. That son is now struggling with a heroin addiction as his son (and their grandson) is caught in the middle of a custody battle that serves as a trigger for his drug use. Those words summarize the situation, but the scenes on the show this season are really telling the story.

I want to thank Jen and Larry for putting themselves out there like this, and I want to applaud Teen Mom OG producers for capturing it and showing it. The show was recently nominated for a Critics’ Choice Award for best unscripted television show, and I think it is scenes like these that send a big “F*** YOU!” to those critics laughing off the nomination or the ones angrily complaining about how the show glamorizes teen pregnancy.

I should point out that Jen and Larry have been inspiring to watch for years. Their dining room table discussions with Ryan, who has been anything but receptive to criticism or advice, could help teach a class on parental restraint and communication skills. I really cannot imagine baring myself emotionally on national television like they have done repeatedly for eight years.

I should also point out that part of what makes Larry and Jen special is that they are willing to be honest with themselves. They seem to come at life with a sense of humility that allows for self examination and perspective. There are other people on this show baring themselves emotionally, but it is not a good thing because they seem to lack the ability to see themselves accurately — at all. Of course, built into the concept of the show is the fact that the main stars are young, so perhaps we will be seeing them grow and mature and become more “Jen and Larrylike” over the next 15-20 seasons. 😉

You can see Jen and Larry and the rest of the Teen Mom OG cast in new episodes airing every Monday night at 9/8c on MTV.

Being an ex spouse of an addict with kids, it’s extremely difficult to be in this situation and I feel for Maci. My ex in laws are so much like Jen and Larry- they ignored the signs for years and made excuses. And the things happening right under their nose in their house were terrifying. I had to keep my kids away, too.
Because Jen is also a Mom and doesn’t want to see how Ryan was so far gone. And my in laws were the same way, and I couldn’t allow my kids to possibly be in harms way. Or find drugs.
One thing Maci could do that I started to do is to ask Jen and Larry to meet at a park to spend time with Bentley. Or, if everyone is comfortable with it, ask them to her house. That way Bentley can still spend time with them, but not at their home. That worked for me for many years until the trust was built back up.
As far as “Mack” goes, she’s a fame wh*re. She suddenly endorses products, flies to another city to get a wedding dress, and pretends to know the dynamic of this whole situation when she’s been around barely a year, most of which Ryan was high for.
She needs to take a seat. Several of them.

So Jen can’t cry and they can’t bring up Bentley or that might “trigger” Ryan to use again? Give me a break. Ryan needs to grow up and be responsible, and when people get emotional or bring up the negative effects on his kid, he needs to deal with it and take responsibility instead of shutting everyone down because he’ll be triggered. I know heroin addiction is no joke, but how is that being responsible for your actions and they way your addictions have effected your family?

    • Tabby Million

You are 100% correct. They better get real! Its time to grow up, triggered when people mention Bentley? Sounds like an excuse to blame Maci when he relapses.

    • Jennifer Jameson

It sounds like a manipulation to me! Ryan is a huge baby. He throws tantrums because he can’t get what he wants and Jen & Larry are allowing his behavior! Maci is right to be scared and worry about Bentley being around Ryan. Heroine is no joke and people rarely recover fully from it.

They enabled and coddled him for years. Now Ryan has all these “triggers” which they have to dance around? Eff that!!!

He sat around and played with his toys under his parent’s roof while Maci struggled to raise their son. They now have a big heroin addicted man-baby on their hands and don’t know how to cope. On top of all this, he picked up Mackenzie who also enables him and points her fingers at people around him…like Maci. It’s all Maci’s fault, never is any of this mess because of Ryan and HIS choices. It’s all a load of bs. I don’t feel sorry for them. They should have laid down the law years ago. When Ryan was visibly under the influence and conking out in mid sentence in front of the cameras, they just acted like nothing was wrong. When he nearly went unconscious while driving, Mackenzie turned off the cameras. It was jaw dropping.

These parents are living in a dream world, they better get their butts over to an NA meeting so they know exactly what they are dealing with and how they should properly act towards an addict. They need to know that addicts can be experts at manipulation. They thrive off pointing fingers. It’s always someone else’s fault, never their own. Coddling Ryan wil no longer work.

I guess I just see this a different way….while I feel sorry for Larry and Jen as parents….there’s been a couple of clues in this season that lead me to believe that Ryan’s issues stem a lot more from his upbringing than being triggered by Maci or his Mom. Remember when Maci’s husband talked about how he had to make Larry leave Bentley’s game because of his behavior? And they hinted that Larry used to do the same thing with Ryan? Maybe Ryan’s problems are a combination of a hard core sports dad whose son didn’t meet his dreams for baseball stardom and a mother who indulged her only child a little too much?

    • ScrappieONE

I saw that too …. Seems like Larry has a bad temper and can get out of control.

Larry and Jen need Al Anon. It will help give them the tools to setting healthy boundaries and leading more fulfilled lives. I hope they look up a local meeting and start attending.

I couldn’t agree more. I think this conversation made it clearer to me at least, that they don’t actually know how to deal with ryan and his drug issues. They don’t have the tools, and they need them.

What do they mean by “triggers”? So if he sees Bentley he will relapse??

    • It’s me

Certain things frustrate an addict so much it makes them want to use…more than normal (puts them over the top).
Like using Bentley against him (if u want to see your son you better do this) & upsetting his mom. Unfortunately their will ALWAYS be triggers & people pushing buttons. He needs to learn to deal with them & not run to drugs when a trigger is pulled

I just want to know…Did Mac write Jen & Larry a letter for knowing Ryan was an addict & not telling her or doing anything about it? Or maybe that was just Maci who was responsible to tell her?

Well we now know what Ryan & Larrys fight was about when he threw Ryan out into the streets (in the street of a free rental property mom inherited…harsh)…and it wasnt about tools like Ryan said it was

Larry and Jen need to take Rhine off the boobie and make him face responsibility for his actions, or lack thereof.

Poor baby gets triggered when he’s forced to face up to the effect his bullshit has on others? Boo phucking hoo. My favorite part of all this academy award winning scene from Jen and Larry is the fact that they can’t say Rhine was a POS father to Bentley because of the drugs, because he’s been a POS father from day one and a huge part of the reason why is because Ma and Pa were more concerned about baby Rhine than they were with baby Bentley.

They all need therapy. As far as Mack goes, well, I don’t know that there is anything that can help what ails that bitch.

“You make her cry, it’s a trigger,” Larry says. “You use Bentley, it’s a trigger.”

Are you flipping kidding me? What kind of rehab let that slide through? NOBODY BUT YOU IS RESPONSIBLE FOR SUCCUMBING TO AN ADDICTION TRIGGER. Ryan is horrible if he put that kind of stress on his own mother. “If you cry I’m going to use”. F off.

That entire thing is just deflecting blame. He perceives injustice towards himself regarding his son (who he hasn’t been there for), which is Maci’s or somebody else’s doing, so he uses. His mother gets upset, so he uses. Everybody else’s fault but his.

POS. I hope this custody battle ends fast and Maci gets sole custody because daddy is an unreformed heroin addict who still hasn’t managed to even stop blaming other people for his mistakes. He isn’t fit to be a parent. I hope if he and his new wife get pregnant someone calls CPS. Any woman who wants to bring a child into a household with a heroin addict needs to be checked out.

I like Jen and Larry. They’re facing a situation with Ryan that countless other parents in America are also encountering. As a substance abuse counselor I can tell you that an addicted person cannot be forced into treatment; he has to make that decision on his own. I’ll also say that unless you’ve experienced a similar situation (as theirs) you have no right or basis to criticize them.

Jen and Larry impress me as parents who deeply love both Ryan and Bentley. Let them resume their visits with Bentley once Ryan passes his drug screen.
