Gary Shirley addresses rumors: Is he dating anyone? Is his mom raising daughter Leah?

Teen Mom star Gary Shirley has a lot on his plate. He is dealing with the fallout from Amber Portwood’s jail sentence while at the same time trying to be the best daddy to his and Amber’s 3-year-old daughter, Leah. As if this wasn’t enough, he is receiving some criticism from his followers and has decided to set the story straight.

Is he dating anyone right now?

First, Gary took to Twitter to tell fans he is “not in any relationship. I’m Single. A girl has to be very damn special after everything I’ve experienced for me to b w her.” This January Gary seemed really into a girl, and this March he participated in a pretty tongue-in-cheek dating rating game, but it looks like Gary actually isn’t ready to settle down with anyone yet.

His relationship with Amber had been quite toxic. When they were together, they were always fighting — Gary was even assaulted by her in front of the Teen Mom camera crew, which led to a snowball of legal problems for Amber, who has also struggled with mental health and addiction issues since she was a young yeen.

After getting out of his long-term on-again, off-again relationship with Amber, Gary needed time to heal. Even though it has been a while since his last split with Amber, he is still not ready to date unless he is absolutely sure about the girl. He tweeted, “I don’t want someone in and out of a relationship ever again Leah doesn’t need anymore confusion.” Leah will be nearly 6-years-old when she is finally reunited with her mom again, and that is only if Amber receives time served and awarded parole, which isn’t guaranteed.

Who’s really taking care of Leah?

Regarding accusations that his mother is the one who is raising Leah, Gary says, “I do have a great mom. But she doesn’t raise my kid. She has her own house, job, life.” Leah lives with Gary full time but every now and again, his mom watches her. Everyone needs time to themselves — especially when they are acting as both mommy and daddy to a young child!

  She will be almost nine if she serves the full five years, but she’ll probably be deducted time already served, and has the chance to be released on parole in a little over two years.

      because, unfortunately, the odds are against this poor little girl.
      it’s incredibly difficult to for a child/teen to break the cycle of dysfunction, so more often than not, they repeat the mistakes of their parents.

      Actually, she is almost FOUR. And I say that because of all she has been exposed to since she has been born! Cussing, violence, being taken away from her mother, etc. Statistics are against her!

I hate when Amber says things like Gary has to be “mommy and daddy” for Leah. Even though it’s true that Gary has to do twice as much for Leah now, there’s a lot of things that a dad cannot do for his daughter or son how a mom can and vice versa.

  I hate it because Amber’s idea of good parenting is giving her kid junk food and putting her in a crib full of death traps. Last episode when she said something about Gary having to be the kind of parent she would be, I wanted to jump through the tv and remind her that her child is a ward of the state and she had child endangerment charges brought against her.

    I’m not disagreeing with anything you said because you’re totally right. But, she only has child endangerment charges on her because her house was tagged. The other charges brought up about child endangerment were because she and Gary were fighting and Leah was in the next room, but those charges were dropped. Just saying.

    I agree 100% plus saying he couldnt date and be the mother she would be, she seems to forget she dated one of Gary’s friends then that other dude in the last season.

I so glad Gary is stepping up and being a great dad to Leah. She needs the stability. Lots of people shy away from their responsibilities but he didn’t. Leah will thank and remember him for this.

Gary isn’t always the best but he does seem to be really stepping up and maturing as time goes on (and as things get worse for Amber)

Does he have a real job? Not trying to criticize, but someone needs to be showing Leah proper work ethic. Her Mother certainly isn’t. Does he just make money of his D-List celebrity?

  Proper work ethic, really? If you had the opportunity to raise your child full time because you had money from a television show, you would too. Any parent would. Don’t be daft.

  Actually I’m pretty sure he does work, at least he use to. Either way, he is still providing me right now Leah could careless about his career. He isn’t doing anything that harms him or her so it doesn’t matter.

    Gary was a CNA for a few years. It doesnt pay very well but he also doesnt seem to live in a high cost a living area so it would be enough to provide the basics. If he is living off mtv funds then at least he isnt blowing through it like some of the other stars.
    I hope Gary is truthful about not dating around but I also hope he is not waiting for Amber.

leah is better off with gary, he was a nurse at one point in the begining when the show started so im sure he can provide for her,better than amber could ever do thats for sure,you cant get the time back its sad really
