Wife defends self against abusive husband, his resulting mug shot is unforgettable

MUG SHOT Derrick Maynard

A Bartlesville, Oklahoma man is behind bars after police say he verbally threatened and then roughed up his wife after a night of very heavy drinking. The resulting booking photo would seem to indicate that his wife got the better of him.

32-year-old Derrick Maynard was arrested for aggravated assault on a family with a weapon and threats to kill, a felony charge. This is the fourth time that Maynard has been arrested for domestic abuse in Washington County.

Mansard’s wife, Angelia Maynard, told deputies that both of them started drinking whiskey in the early afternoon of December 16. Later in the day, Angelia indicated that Derrick became hostile towards her, hurling obscenities.

After allegedly verbally abusing her, Maynard tossed a Wii remote at his wife. She tried to put her man to bed so he could sleep it off but Derrick woke up a short time later. His verbal abuses escalated, as he told his wife she “needed to go kill herself” and that she “did not deserve to live.”

Derrick then grabbed an oil heater and hurled the heavy object at his wife and then she indicated that he picked up a pellet rifle, leveled it off at her head saying “you deserve to die” and pulled the trigger, via a report from KOKH. According to the police report the pellet gun was not loaded.

Angelia told authorities that Derrick then pounced on top of her and started punching her with his fists. She reacted by curling up in the fetal position and kicking back in hopes of getting him off of her. She believed that these kicks connected with his nose and lips, but indicated that the black eye seen in the mug shot was caused by Derrick’s slamming his own head against walls and doors in an earlier drunken rage.

In spite of the violence, Angelia holds out hope for her husband whom she believes suffers from depression, alcoholism and mental instability. She told KJRH:

“He’s inside screaming for help and no one will help him. He’s not a bad guy. They are looking at him on the outside. I’m looking at him on the inside. I see this sweet, innocent man, trapped in his own guilt. His own grief.”

Bartlesville Police Chief Tom Holland had somewhat of a different take or at least some additional explanations as to how Derrick’s face became so rearranged in that booking image, stating that Derrick repeatedly banged his head against hospital, police car and jail walls.

Angelia-Maynard

Angelia contributes a majority of Derrick’s problems to his struggles with coping with the death of his brother in 2010 and then his mom in January. She told 2NEWS that she will not bail him out until authorities can guarantee he’ll be admitted to a mental hospital. She added:

“We can keep bailing him out all the time. He’s just going to get out and drink and blame himself for his mom’s death and everything else. We really need to get to the source and get him some help. He needs help. He really does.”

Angelia and Derrick met at a mental ward in 2006.
