Why Sarah Jessica Parker wore black to her wedding with Matthew Broderick
Sarah Jessica Parker has been married to Matthew Broderick for over 16 years, and she’s loved every minute of it.
“I love Matthew Broderick. Call me crazy, but I love him,” the actress told the next issue of Harper’s Bazaar. “We can only be in the marriage we are. We’re very devoted to our family and our lives. I love our life. I love that he’s the father of my children, and it’s because of him that there’s this whole other world that I love.” The happily married couple have three children together: James Wilke, 10, and twin daughters Tabitha and Loretta, 4.
She says she and Matthew never chased fame and money, they just wanted to be good actors. “Matthew and I come from a different time and place,” she says. “When we were young people, all we ever wanted was to be good working actors. We didn’t think of fame or money because, honestly, money was never part of the dream.” She became known as a fashion icon after her taste-setting role in HBO’s Sex and the City, but she says she’s never spent any time trying to cultivate an image, saying she doesn’t think she’s ever spent 10 minutes thinking about it. “I can’t even recall a conversation,” she says. Maybe it’s her stylists and managers that have those conversations, because many of her red carpet looks have been deliciously head-turning.
16 years ago, May 19, 1997, Sarah Jessica (48) and Matthew (now 51) got hitched in a very nontraditional way. Matthew wore a suit straight off the rack, and Sarrah Jessica wore a taffeta black dress, the first dress she saw, according to the wedding announcement. Guests were invited to a party in NYC, and were surprised to find out it was a wedding. That’s the main reason SJP decided to wear black: she didn’t want the media speculating in case they spotted her buying a white wedding dress.
Sarah now has regrets about not wearing white. In 2009 she told Harper’s Bazaar that if she and Matthew ever renew their vows she plans to “white it up. I’d wear a beautiful, proper, wedding dress like I should have worn that day.”
Sarah’s not alone in choosing black for her wedding gown. Just this year celebs Shanae Grimes and Avril Lavigne chose black on their big day. If these sweet photos are any indication of their wedding day, SJP has nothing to regret. They look adorable, and all that matters is that they had a good time and were happy. However, I do hope they renew their vows so we get to see what kind of wild and fantastic white wedding SJP would have now.
