WE SO EXCITED! New Rebecca Black album and single: “LOL” to follow up “Friday”!

Rebecca Black new single LOL

Rebecca Black is about to be a very busy girl. There is no clear idea when she will hit the studio or with (or without) what label, but Rebecca will be recording a full album with a lead single titled “LOL.” The Sun (via 3 News) says “it’s as ‘catchy’ as ‘Friday’…” with lyrics like “BFF you make me LOL.”

My first reaction: “OMFG.” Priceless.

Rebecca Black's new album and single "LOL"

For our loyal Starcasm readers who have no idea what the internet is, “LOL” translates to “Laugh Out Loud” in the chatspeak vernacular. It’s a term Rebecca Black’s fan base of 13-year-olds are intimately familiar with, but if the lyrical bent of “Friday” is any indication, she’s not going to take that for granted. Expect Rebecca to explicate the inner workings of laughing out loud, much like she did with the days of the week.

“You just told a funny joke.
Now I am LOL.
And ROTFLMAO comes after…words.”

(Oh, wait. Will the inclusion of “A” in the lyrics mean a parental warning label???)

You know, nothing I can come up with will possibly be as funny as “LOL” is going to be, so I’m gonna quit trying.

My second reaction: Based on everything I’ve seen and heard since this intense amount of fame was thrust upon her, Rebecca Black is a very sweet and sincere young lady who definitely deserves a second turn in the spotlight, if only as an appreciation for the absolutely unique pop artifact she gave us with “Friday.”

Turn off the hate and bear with me for just a moment: If you keep an open mind about it, you’ll realize there’s not a thing about “Friday” that you’ve ever heard before, not a thing about the video that your mind can process in a rational manner. It’s an utterly fresh slice of “WTF” (to use another internet abbreviation; parents, ask your kids – on second thought, don’t) that is now resting in the part of your brain that’s the repository for information you weren’t expecting but need lots and lots of time to process.

Just give it time. By the time “LOL” hits, you’ll probably get it.

BTW, if you think doctoral dissertations aren’t being written about “Friday” right freakin’ now, you’re kidding yourself. I’m not sure what that says about the state of academia, but the state of pop is just fine, folks.

Rebecca Black new album LOL

There is no word yet if Ark Music Factory principals Clarence Jey or Patrice White are going to be involved, although I certainly hope so. If you think Rebecca has a lot riding on a solid followup, the real pressure is on those guys to replicate the magic they created with Rebecca. They proved with her they can create an attention-getting novelty. And to their credit, they proved through Alana Lee’s “Butterflies” they can craft pitch perfect pop for kids, and through Abby Victor’s “Crush On You” they can make accessible dance pop for the same demo.

The rest of the AMF retinue is a little inconsistent, but if Jey and White are going to be involved in Rebecca’s next big move, all eyes will be on them. Your move, guys!
