VIDEO Hockey player plays Super Troopers cat game with reporter

Kaunisto

Ray Kaunisto is a center with the Kalamazoo Wings of the ECHL (formerly East Coast Hockey League). He’s a five-year pro trying to soar with the Wings, who are currently sixth out of seven in their division of the Eastern Conference.

So, this week, Ray had some fun with a sideline reporter during a break between periods.

Remember the Cat Game (often referred to as the “Meow Game”) from Super Troopers?

No? It’s almost exactly what it sounds like. Here’s a refresher:

The game is one of the sillier and more lighthearted moments in a movie full of absurd little comedy gems. And it’s endured on college campuses across this great land from the time of its release in 2002 to this very day.

So, here’s Ray’s take on the Cat Game:

The Cat Counter across the bottom of the screen there notes only six “meow”s, but astute ears will notice the final “meow” as Ray says adieu.

And astute eyes will notice the reporter’s amusement as he figures out what’s going on.

It’s almost a shame, though, that Ray didn’t slip some variations into the tried-and-true “meow” formula. Maybe a “There’s room for improvement; we’re not playing purrfectly” right now. Or a “We’re like saucers of milk out there, and they’re trying to lap us up.” And of course there’s the reference to old Coach Fish Skeleton.

In any case, kudos to Ray, good luck to the Wings, and here’s hoping we see more sideline silly times at sporting events the world over.
