VIDEO Fresh Prince’s Janet Hubert slams Jada Pinkett Smith over Oscars boycott
Janet Hubert, who played Aunt Viv in The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, has shared a video in which she eviscerates Jada Pinkett Smith over her stance on boycotting the Oscars.
Smith shared the video yesterday, and called for African-Americans to “let the Academy do them with all grace and love and let’s do us differently” as she expressed her anger at a lack of diversity in this year’s Academy Awards nominees.
60-year-old Hubert not only disagreed with Jada–she flat-out accused Will Smith’s wife of being lost in the vacuum of her own fame, arguing that the response was nothing but sour grapes over her husband not receiving a nomination for his work in Concussion.
First of all, Miss Thing does your man not have a mouth of his own with which to speak? The second thing, girlfriend, there’s a lot of s**t going on in the world that you all don’t seem to recognize. People are dying. Our boys are being shot left and right. People are starving. People are trying to pay bills. And you’re talking about some motherf***ing actors and Oscars. It just ain’t that deep.
Hubert’s take down of Smith didn’t stop there. “And here’s the other thing – they don’t care. They don’t care! And I find it ironic that somebody who has made their living, and made millions and millions of dollars from the very people you’re talking about boycotting just because you didn’t get a nomination, just because you didn’t win,” she said.
“You ain’t Barack and Michelle Obama and y’all need to get over yourselves.”
It should be noted that there’s been bad blood between Hubert and Will Smith for years now. In 2011 she called Will Smith an a**hole when asked about a possible show reunion. Hubert holds Will responsible for being replaced in her role by actress Daphne Reid for the final three years of the show’s run.
Yesterday, Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs released an official statement about non-white actors getting shut out of the Oscar nominations.
