VIDEO Clip – Sister Wives: The Brown family prepares to “come out” as polygamists
Tonight TLC’s controversial reality show Sister Wives is back for a second season, and we get to watch a meta-situation of sorts. The Brown family is a-rattle with nerves as they prepare to leave their Utah home for New York to come out as polygamists to the world on national television.
That decision wasn’t one to be taken lightly, and they’ve already experienced the fallback. One of the first causalities of the Browns coming out was first wife Meri’s job. She was heartbroken, but also understanding about their decision, telling Oprah:
“They felt that they needed to protect the company, I think. It actually makes me really sad because I loved my job. It breaks my heart, definitely. … But I understand where they’re coming from.”
They also had to put up with public scrutiny, and a criminal investigation that they are still worried about, although they moved to Las Vegas to avoid it.
While there were certainly negative consequences to the family’s honesty and fame, they’ve also reaped some benefits. They experience a great deal of relief not having to hide who they are, and how they live anymore, and the experience makes their very complicated relationship more open.
