Tracy Morgan driving one year after accident: Is he OK?

Passers-by were startled to see Tracy Morgan driving a Lamborghini in New York City this weekend, one year after the wreck that nearly took his life. Morgan was out and about with a friend, and the 46-year-old comedian flashed many a peace sign, took frequent pictures with fans (traffic lights permitting), and even let at least one fan ride with him for a few blocks.

New York-area reporter Steven Lacy was among the first to Tweet out photos of Morgan riding high:

Soon after, an outpouring of goodwill took over the streets:

Morgan was involved in a fatal car crash on the New Jersey Turnpike last June. A Wal-Mart truck driver lost control of his vehicle and struck the chauffered SUV limousine in which Morgan and friends were traveling. The wreck took the life of Morgan’s friend James McNair and put Morgan himself in the hospital for months.

He’s been seen more and more around the city in recent weeks, though, and has been more and more willing to address the crash that nearly took his life.

“I spoke with [Morgan] briefly,” said Lacy, on Facebook. “He said he was feeling well and when I said I loved the car he said ‘thanks’ and that he was being careful behind the wheel.”

Lacy added, “As a huge Tracy Morgan fan it was so great to see him back out in public and feeling better. Much love Tracy!”

Last month, Morgan was grateful and direct in Today Show appearance. “I can’t believe I’m here,” he said to Matt Lauer. “I can’t believe I’m in front of you.”

Morgan continued, “There are times where I have my good days and my bad days, where I forgot things, you know,” he admitted. “There are times where I have the headaches and the nose bleeds.”

There’s still no word from Morgan’s reps on when he might be able to resume touring or acting, but it’s good to see him up and around again.
