Retracted birth announcement goes viral for all the right reasons
After 19-year-old Kai Bogert told his parents he wanted to live as a man rather than a woman, Yolanda Bogert and Guy Kershaw showed their support in one of the sweetest ways possible.
“In 1995 we announced the arrival of our sprogget, Elizabeth Anne, as a daughter. He informs us that we were mistaken. Oops! Our bad. We would now like to present, our wonderful son – Kai Bogert,” Yolanda and Guy said in a “retraction” posted in the Dec. 1 edition of Australia’s Courier-Mail. “Loving you is the easiest thing in the world. Tidy your room.”
The announcement quickly went viral with thousands praising the parents for their reaction to Kai’s big news. Speaking to the newspaper for a new article today, Yolanda explained placing the ad was a “no-brainer” — even though the family was somewhat taken aback a few days ago when Kai told them he no longer wanted to live as a girl.
“I needed to show my son I support him 100 percent and wanted to let the world know that,” Yolanda said. She also commented on Facebook that she’s pleased by the positive public response, even though widespread attention was never her goal. “It put a smile on his face, which was the aim. I’m taking the other smiles as bonuses.”
Kai confirmed he’s happy with how everything is working out.
“This last week has changed everything for me,” he said. “I am still me but I am more me than I was a few days ago and feel free.”
