Lindsay Lohan cries on Letterman, Liza Minnelli claims she was recruited to stage intervention

Lindsay Lohan departs the Ed Sullivan Theater after taping 'The Late Show With David Letterman' in New York City, NY, United States.

Lindsay Lohan appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman last night and got grilled by the host about rehab and addiction. A short while into the interview, Lindsay began crying over the tough questions which makes her the second young star to be brought to tears by Dave (Justin Bieber was another — allegedly). Then, this morning, Liza Minnelli came forward claiming to have been recruited to stage an intervention for the troubled star.

During the interview, Dave didn’t hold back, getting right to the hard-hitting questions everyone wanted to know. “Now, aren’t you supposed to be in rehab now?” Dave asked the Liz & Dick actress. She jokingly replied, “Do you not watch anything that goes on?” According to Lindsay, she will begin a three-month program on May 2 following her recent legal troubles over allegedly lying to police about a car accident last year.

“How many times have you been in rehab?” Dave then pried, getting the honest answer, “Several.”

Dave didn’t stop there. He continued, “And how will this time be different? What are they rehabbing, first of all? What is on their list? What are they going to work on when you walk through the door?”

At first, Lindsay remained composed, telling Dave, “I think, to be honest, I’m the happiest when I’m working and the healthiest, and I think this an opportunity for me to, you know, focus on what I love in life. I don’t think it’s a bad thing — I think it’s a blessing.”

When Dave turned the questions to those of addiction, things got a little strained but Lindsay tried to stay calm and laughed, “Now you sound like Dr. Phil!” After looking off camera a few times, Lindsay then took Dave’s list of questions off his desk and began to read them to herself. The next question on his list was “Why are you always in trouble?”

Lindsay responded, telling Dave about how she’s a “target” and was “going through a phase” but now is learning to take responsibility for what she’s done. “You grow up, and you mature, and I’ve said that a million times, I know that — but what else am I supposed to say when it’s a process of life and I’m not trying to deny any situation I’m put in?” she asked.

Lindsay told the host that she’s excited about going to rehab and is actually looking forward to getting some time alone to focus on herself. She also promised that the next time she appears on the show, her troubled past will be a distant memory.

Lindsay then teared up and told the host, “I’m flustered right now because you made me tear up because you’re very sweet,” she explained to the host who applauded her courage to come on his show and face his questions.

In other news, a rep for Liza Minnelli has confirmed to Radar Online that she was approached to stage an intervention for the star last December by Lindsay’s close friend Claus Hjelmbak.

“Claus was desperate to do anything to try and save Lindsay’s life,” a source close to the situation tells Radar. “He was so concerned for her well-being because of her continued use of prescription pills and booze. He reached out to Liza Minnelli’s camp, in the hope that she could help. Liza has battled her own demons with alcohol and has been very supportive publicly of Lindsay.”
