How Beyonce kept her secret album under wraps
Beyonce stunned everyone when she released a special self-titled “visual” album via iTunes yesterday. In a digital world where everything is tracked, how did she manage to do this?
The deadline for the album constantly moved, and lots of code names were used. Not having a deadline allowed Beyonce to make sure everything was just as she wanted it. According to anonymous executives speaking to Billboard, everything started to take shape in October, and she was finalizing recordings around Thanksgiving.
Last week final meetings were held with Columbia and iTunes about an album called “Lily,” the secret name for the album to throw off leaks. Only senior executives at iTunes were aware of the album, and most of the producers and employees at Columbia were told of the album Thursday, the day before it dropped.
