Glee’s Naya Rivera welcomes baby boy — find out his traditionally female name

Naya Rivera Baby Boy Name - Husband Ryan Dorsey

It’s a boy for Glee‘s Naya Rivera and husband Ryan Dorsey — although name traditionalists wouldn’t know it based on the baby’s given moniker. While the new parents are keeping quiet about the news, TMZ obtained the official birth certificate, which shows Naya’s son is named Josey Hollis Dorsey. The document also reveals he was born at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in L.A. on September 17.

Another insider confirmed Naya’s son’s arrival to Us Weekly, saying, “They are so excited to be first-time parents….Naya was born to be a mother and is doing really great so far. And Ryan has amazing paternal instincts and has been waiting on them both hand and foot.”

Lately, it seems like the big name trend among celebrities is to go with traditionally male names for girls, e.g. Maxwell, Wyatt, James and Arlo. It’s much less common to pick such a traditionally female name for a boy, but that’s definitely what Naya did: Although the spelling “Josey” doesn’t register in the Social Security Administration’s list of the top 1,000 most-popular boy and girl names for 2014, Josie is No. 254 (while longer form Josephine was No. 147).

In the rare case of boys named “Josie,” it is said to be a variation of Josiah, rather than Joseph. That isn’t to say pinning “Josey” on a boy is entirely unprecedented: Clint Eastwood played the title character in the 1976 film The Outlaw Josey Wales, which is about “a Missouri farmer [who] joins a Confederate guerrilla unit and winds up on the run from the Union soldiers who murdered his family.”
