George Strait gets unwound on attendance record with final tour stop
Arguably the most popular artist in the history of country music bid farewell to the last official tour of his incomparable career by destroying the North American indoor concert attendance record as 104,793 fans packed the home of the Dallas Cowboys Saturday night.
For a little comparison, the previous record was held by The Rolling Stones, who drew 87,500 in 1981 for a show at the Louisiana Superdome.
When it comes to Strait, sometimes you just let the numbers speak for themselves… And they speak loudly.
44 #1 songs on Billboard’s Hot Country charts (best all time)
60 #1 hits on all music charts (best all time)
13 multi-platinum, 33 platinum, and 38 gold albums
Has sold over 100 million records worldwide
The first and only artist in history to have at least one single enter the Top 10 of a Billboard chart for 30 consecutive years
During “The Cowboy Rides Away” tour, Strait has sold out all 45 arenas and stadiums he’s performed at – singing his songs straight to an estimated 1 million fans during that run.
Strait has stated that although this is his last tour he will continue to play occasional gigs. He’s also signed up for another 5 album deal with MCA records.
All hail King George – here’s my favorite Strait classic which I had the good fortune to see live many, many years ago:
