BEFORE & AFTER Zendaya criticizes mag for changing her body shape with Photoshop, shares original picture
Mess with Zendaya, be prepared for a perfectly stated rebuttal! First the actress called out Giuliana Rancic for her “disrespectful” comments about the hairstyle Zendaya donned at the Oscars — which led to the big Fashion Police shakeup. Then, this week, Zendaya put Modeliste Magazine on blast in the most eloquent of ways: by pointing out the picture they published of her doesn’t actually show her body.
“Had a new shoot come out today and was shocked when I found my 19 year old hips and torso quite manipulated,” the K.C. Undercover star said on Instagram. “These are the things that make women self conscious, that create the unrealistic ideals of beauty that we have. Anyone who knows who I am knows I stand for honest and pure self love.” To really make her point, Zendaya shared the “real pic” (on the right side) — which definitely didn’t need any retouching to begin with!
In response, Modeliste replaced the Photoshopped picture with the original on their website. The editors also apologized for the edited picture on Instagram and said they are actually pulling the whole print issue…
We understand that re-touching of photos is a sensitive subject not only in the fashion industry but across all media. Upon reviewing edited images in comparison with the originals, Modeliste Editor-in-Chief, Amy McCabe jointly with Zendaya and her parents made the immediate decision to pull the issue and are working with Zendaya at her request to publish the complete un-edited and authentic images from our Cover shoot in Puerto Vallarta. We stand to represent and advocate a message of positive body image, self love, and embracing all aspects of individuality, natural beauty and the empowerment of women.
In the Instagram post, the magazine said the full set of unedited pictures will be released on their website later today. Wouldn’t it be awesome if they continue to do that from here on out?
