Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes may have just made the record books for the quickest divorce settlement of all time! After filing for divorce just a week and a half ago, Katie and her former partner have already come to an agreement.
This morning, Katie’s attorney, Jonathan Wolfe, told Us Weekly, “The case has been settled and the agreement has been signed. We are thrilled for Katie and her family and are excited to watch as she embarks on the next chapter of her life.”
That’s right — just 10 days after the original filing, Katie and Tom have officially put an end to their marriage. Now that’s impressive! Kim Kardashian filed for divorce in November, and she and Kris Humphries are still battling!
Katie’s attorney also added, “We thank Tom’s counsel for their professionalism and diligence that helped bring about this speedy resolution.” Sources had previously said that Tom wanted “meaningful and significant” contact with the couple’s daughter, Suri Cruise, and that his time with her could make or break the settlement.
Sources close to Katie told TMZ that she was in no way trying to keep Tom from seeing Suri and that as soon as he finishes shooting his new movie, he will be able to spend time with her. Katie has, however, filed for sole custody and was asking for a “suitable amount” of child support.
The settlement comes just hours after the couple released the following joint statement:
“We are committed to working together as parents to accomplish what is in our daughter Suri’s best interests. We want to keep matters affecting our family private and express our respect for each other’s commitment to each of our respective beliefs and support each other’s roles as parents.”
We could have sworn this divorce was going to be a lot more complicated than that. Even though the lawyers had reportedly been working on the case for hours a day, and even met for a full business day on Saturday, a Hollywood divorce in less than two weeks is unheard of! Luckily for Tom, Katie was never in it for the money, which surely made it a lot easy for the two to come to such a quick agreement.
Although we are sad to see another Hollywood couple bite the dust, we look forward to more couch jumping from Tom — he’s bound to fall in love again, right?
UPDATE: Tom’s lawyer, Bert Fields, tells TMZ, “The Tom Cruise-Katie Holmes case has been settled with a signed agreement. Tom is really pleased we got there, and so am I.”
