Miss Pennsylvania Valerie Gatto is using her experiences as a “product of rape” to educate on sexual assault

Valerie Gatto Miss USA Hopeful

Miss Pennsylvania Valerie Gatto doesn’t know much about her biological father. Neither does her mother, as their only meeting was when he grabbed her at knifepoint when she was walking along a busy Pittsburgh street at the age of 19. He then raped her behind a building before she managed to escape when a car’s headlights spooked the attacker.

Valerie, a product of that violent meeting and current Miss USA hopeful, told Today she uses her mother’s experiences to educate others on sexual assault.

“Being a voice is life-changing, and I just want to keep going,” said the 24-year-old, who is competing in the national competition on Sunday. “I’m not sharing this story for publicity. I’m not doing this for any selfish reasons. I truly am doing this to change the world and make a difference.”

Caitlin Dumpe, a spokeswoman for Miss USA, told TribLIVE Valerie is proof women can overcome adversity.

“She’s truly an inspiration with the positivity she spreads and her general attitude through all her struggles,” Caitlin said. “She has a very unique and inspiring background, which she shares freely in hopes of shedding light on the issue and being a role model for others who may possibly be in similar situations.”

Valerie said her mother considered adoption before deciding to raise the baby with help from Valerie’s maternal grandparents. Still, they struggled and relied on government programs at times.

“Although there were financial hardships, my home was full of love and support. It is because of my positive upbringing, I am the woman I am today,” said Valerie, who graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 2012. She added that even if she doesn’t get the Miss USA platform, she hopes to start a program to benefit underprivileged children in the United States. “I want to show people of all ages that your circumstances do not define your life, and with hard work, sacrifice and a positive attitude, anything is possible. I believe my purpose is to inspire and encourage others.”

Valerie will complete alongside 50 other contestants in for the 2014 Miss USA title on Sunday at 8/7c. The program will air on NBC.
