Report slams Joe Paterno, Penn State officials for “catastrophic failures”

Penn State Head Coach Joe Paterno

The Board of Trustees at Penn State University went straight to the top by hiring former Director of the F.B.I. Louis Freeh to conduct an independent investigation of the school in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child molestation scandal.

The results are now in and it’s hard to imagine that they could be anymore damning of late head football coaching legend Joe Paterno and other university heads. The conclusion is that these leaders, “failed to protect against a child sexual predator harming children for over a decade.”

In part the report stated that Paterno, vice president Gary Schultz and athletic director Tim Shurley “repeatedly concealed critical facts” with the intent of protecting the reputation of Penn State.

Jerry Sandusky was recently found guilty of 45 counts of child sexual abuse and while most were expecting an ugly picture to be painted by the report many wondered exactly how condemning it would be of one of the most beloved figures in the history of college football, Joe Paterno. Time will bear out that the findings of this investigation will forever stain the legacy of the man people lovingly called JoePa.

• Paterno failed to take immediate action after Mike McQueary told him about Sandusky raping a boy in the gym shower in Feb. 2001 because Paterno “did not want to interfere with people’s weekend.”

• “At the very least, Mr. Paterno could have alerted the entire football staff, in order to prevent Sandusky from bringing another child into the Lasch Building.”

Here’s a portion of the findings:

Four of the most powerful people at The Pennsylvania State University — President Graham B. Spanier, Senior Vice President-Finance and Business Gary C. Schultz, Athletic Director Timothy M. Curley and Head Football Coach Joseph V. Paterno — failed to protect against a child predator harming children for over a decade. These men concealed Sandusky’s activities from the Board of Trustees, the University community and authorities. They exhibited a striking lack of empathy for Sandusky’s victims by failing to inquire as to their safety and well-being, especially by not attempting to determine the identity of the child who Sandusky assaulted in the Lasch Building in 2001. Further, they exposed this child to additional harm by alerting Sandusky, who was the only one who knew the child’s identity, of what McQueary saw in the shower on the night of February 9, 2001.

This report sadly confirms what many feared; horrible and tragically bad decisions were made by people in positions of great influence and power that furthered the ability of Sandusky to commit his atrocious crimes.

I feel like they’re placing more blame on JoePa because he isn’t here to refute any accusations. I’m not saying what he did or didn’t do was right, but anything could be said now whether it really happened or not and people will have no other choice to hear it.

You think that outside investigators are blaming it on him b/c he is an easy target? Why? What do they care if it is an easy target or not? What would it take to prove it then? Since he’s gone now, I guess no matter what has been found, the answer can always be, “Well he’s not around to defend himself.” Rediculous.

Why can’t you people admit that Joe Pa was not the hero you thought he was? You should be sickened by the thought of a man who had public adoration for his work in the community and his ethics when you find that he did NOTHING for all those at risk boys. His pedophile friend Sandusy had his pick of underpriviledges boys and Paterno KNEW THAT. Paterno knew Sandusky wouldn’t try that with any of the privelidged Penn State students, and they were too old for his liking anyway. So the poor kids with no fathers, broken homes, addict parents, etc. apparantly weren’t important enough to Paterno. You people are sick, get over your idol worship of a man who has been proven to be less than his rabid fans thought he was. It’s a fact now.

It should be a felony crime if u do not report child abuse u have witnesses. When u just ignore what u have seen, it can sometimes cost a child their life. I sincerely hope the people still living never get a moments rest for what they did to those boys. That whole staying out of another family’s business is the biggest load of crap excuse in the world!!

This is so infuriating. If they had just done the right thing the moment they found out about this, they would have been heroes. People loved Paterno so ferociously, even at that time, they would have praised him for turning Sandusky in. His fans think he could do no wrong (people still seem to think so even after all this). They would have thought of him as a guardian angel for those kids and brave for taking such a huge risk by turning in his assistant coach. Yes, there would have been bad publicity and a media circus, but every single aspect of the blame would have been placed entirely on Sandusky, if everyone else had done the right thing at the time. The media and tarnished reputation would have been NOTHING compared to the situation they’ve created by sweeping it under the rug. PSU would have gotten over it, and Paterno and the other higher-ups would have been forever seen as heroes. It would have been nothing but a distant memory now.
